Bathing A Silkie Tutorial (Pic HEAVY!)

Thank you for the wonderful tutorial!! I would have been very nervous doing this without some guidelines. I have 3 Silkies & 3 White cochins who will need some bathing at some point. Of course I would go & get the birds that need baths!!

Oh Well! Have fallen in love with these furry feathered footed chicks. Any tips on trimming the feathers on their feet? At a friend's suggestion, I trimmed a few feathers on just one foot and the poor little hen started to bleed profusely!! Scared me half to death!!!

Finally got the bleeding stopped with some flour & direct pressure. Slathered her foot with bag balm and kept her in the garage for 5 days. Just put her back in the coop with others tonight. Hope all goes well tomorrow when they wake up and find her there.
Thanks Again!!

I wouldn't suggest it, for the exact reason you stated. It's easy to nip the quick.

Besides, their feather legged... they're supposed to have feathers there! If cleanliness is an issue, I would slightly trim a little at a time just to clean it up a little. I wouldn't ever hack half the feather off or anything.

Love it! Now if it would only stop raining here long enough to keep my Silkies clean once they have been washed. Definitely doing this after the rainy season.

So adorable! I use to have 4 silkies till one died sadly, but I do bathe my little fluffy babies right now it's to cold! But how I bathe my silkies ( only my younger ones I might enter into a show) I grab a round metal tub fill it with warm water and add dish detergent to the water than I grab the silkie and I put him/her in their then grab a plastic cup and wet them then grab the dish detergent and put it on them (they are jumpy and hate baths) and I carefully start to lather ( they jump out sometimes) and after that I wrap them in a towel and blow dry them. Sorry this was so long! I just want to know how to clean my dearys clean!

How often should you bathe a silkie?

I used to bathe them for shows only. But depending on your need, flock, and housekeeping practices, you may need to do it more often. Its personal preference really. I wouldn't suggest anything more often than every 2 to 4 weeks though, and thats only if you are have seriously dirty birds, or have mite/bug problems.
