Yesterday my black copper maran and mutt chick got overheated. I left them out in the shade and the sun came around in the afternoon and just about cooked them. I was horrified at the sight. Beaks open and heads drooping. I decided they needed to get cooled off. I went to their little pen and got one out and was going to put it in the pond but on second thought maybe they are too weak to stay afloat. I have 2-5 gallon buckets as you can see in the picture and I use them for watering my red stars. Well..they seemed big enough so I put the young chicken in. It did not flap the wings or try to fly. It just laid there and enjoyed it. The darn thing fell asleep. So while I had that one in I went and got the other one. Same thing. No fuss. Not really believing this was on their own, thinking to myself it's just a fluke because they are so hot anything is welcome to them. Today I put them in again. Same thing only this time they had not been in the sun and were cooler. They FELL ASLEEP AGAIN!!! Course when they heard the beep on the camera they woke up. I waited around until they perched on the side of the bucket. They can easily hop out to my amazement. I then picked them up and put them back in the pen. I would not have believed they would be so ok with it had it not been myself seeing it with my own eyes and taking pictures. It is very very hard for me to still believe they will sleep in water. I did try it with my red star hens. NO WAY would they sit in that water and I have a few scratches to heal from it.
