Hello all, I'm new to chickens and am about to get 3 from the poultry swap tomorow.

I was reading about vaccinations and saw that you should only vaccinate for local diseases. I'm in Baton Rouge, LA. Are there any resources that might help with this? Or does anyone have any recommendations about what to do?

Thanks

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! I'm afraid I'm not familiar with vaccination for local diseases but please do pop by your state thread. They can be found here ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you
Hope members in your area are able to help you.

Good luck with the swop and enjoy BYC :frow

At swap meets it is very much "Buyer Beware." The sellers tend to disappear and you won't find them later if there is a problem. Mainly look birds over before buying. No runny eyes or nose, no couhghing, unusual odor, patchy bald spots, redness or swelling anywhere. You want to check that beaks look normal and line up. No crossbeaks , or twisted toes. Beyond that you are pretty much at their mercy - may have males passed off as females or mixed breeds passed off as something rare. Old hens passed off as great layers.

Do have an idea of what breed(s) you are interested in and read about them on BYC first to learn their main features.

Glad you joined the flock! Here is some info on vaccinations:

If possible, find out from the sellers if the chickens you are buying have been vaccinated for anything already.
