I heard the omnious noise. The "clicking" of a bat in the stove pipe. Now, mind you, I like bats. I really do. I even have no problems catching the things... most of the time. But this bat... this bat was on steroids I tell ya! Pretty sure this is the one..

Anyhoo- After an hour of it flying around the house, and me flailing the net wildly and running like a banshee screaming at the thing, all the while in my bathrobe, I finally caught it and released it outside. Now all I have to do is get someone over here to replace the cap on the chimney, cause I ain't gettin up on that roof!

It was a joke. We have nine bat species in Iowa, including the Little Brown, Northern (Long-eared), Silver-Haired, Eastern Pipistrelle, Big Brown, Red, Hoary, Evening and Indiana. The Indiana bat is on the federal endangered species list, but I'm pretty sure it was just a brown bat- and iffin I had to wager a guess, I'd say a big brown! I'd guess it's wingspan was probably only around 12" or so.....

I am glad it was a joke, I wouldnt want something like that within TEN states of me,lol.
What would a great big black bat species be? Just curious.(They have been seen around here.)

Be very careful with bats and avoid contact as they are a high carrier of rabies... I like to watch them at a distance with their acrobatics and they are great for eating bugs but would definitely not handle one.

Probably a hoary bat. It's the largest (I think) species in the northern states, with a wingspan somewheres around 15 inches or so, although they are pretty solitary.

I have bottlefed baby bats before, but I wouldnt want to handle a wild one either. When we have had to get them out of the house, its with a broom and a dust pan....(not killing it)
A hoary bat....I will have to google that, never heard of them. Thanks!
