Did you guys notice that this thread is three years old? I don't think I've seen Deb around here in a year or more.

Hopefully nothing to do with bats !

I noticed the date before I posted I posted anyways trying to keep someone from attempting cleanup on their own histo ain,t no joke I have had a coupla construction jobs closed down long enough to get the right cleanup crew in to make sure no one got sick, pigeon feces are just as bad when they get dry and are able to become airborne. I have bats here where I live I kina enjoy seeing them . I hate mosquitos I 2 kinds of mosquitos .

Wow, how much blood does a misquito suck from our chickens every night? I would be happy to have bats to be their natural bug zapper! I am glad so many people understand the true value of bats! Bats are way cool! Protect the bat: protect the chicken!
Bats like huge slabs of rock to live in. Bridges and overpasses work wonderful for them. All the tiny cracks and expansion joints are loved and used. Bat houses dont work because we dont understand radiant heat. Put your bat house on your chimny. Still they would rather be in the eve beside the chimny. Most state health officials will tell you all bats have rabies. Yes and the government is always honest! This may be an old thread but its still important. Bottom line bats are cool!

Bats ARE cool, just not when they decide to live in your kitchen. Then they stink, literally and figuratively.

There are at least two people I think that survived rabies that I have read . That young girl a few years ago in the states and I think it was a man in another country? LUCKY they are very rare to survive!

+1 to what das fisch said. I do exclusions and clean up and there are correct ways and times to do them. Besides the guano, they void a lot and the urine will stain and stink in time. A well ventilated area helps, as does a drier climate. The rabies rate in bats is lower than in some other mammals such as skunks, foxes, and raccoons, but because they are found in colonies there are a lot more animals to increase the risk.

Bats are great critters to have around, just not in structures frequented by people. They will come back to areas they have colonized before as they will be able to smell the sites. Small brown bats can enter and exit through openings as small as a dime.

Last year we put up a bat house.....no lunk in there....maybe I dont have it in a good location, It is in the East eave of my barn, under the roof overhang. Out of the weather, and out of the sun. I thought it would be a good place....apparently not. I love to watch them in the early evenings....there seem to be about 10 or so....flying around here. I just wanted to make sure my hens would be safe from ilness. So far...so good. Guess I wont worry too much then. Thanks everyone.
Last summer some small brown bats decided to live under the peak of our roof hang over. This was also over my chicken run and is on the south end of my house. I hope this helps you find a location. I have been trying to find out if the bat poop that fell onto a board under the peak will hurt my chickens. I'm also puzzled as to why these bats died towards the end of August. 2 of them fell, one onto one of the boards I mentioned. The other on the netting over my run. I found the one on the netting first, it had a broken wing and was dangling from this wing. I found it in the morning when I went out to care for chickens. A couple weeks later one of my chickens died. Then about a month after that the other was found on the board with the poop. I am afraid to move this board, afraid the poop may fall into the run, chickens eat it and make them sick. The chickens can't get on the board right now but I want to make them a new coop and move that board.
