We're on Sand Mountain - the nearest big city is Gadsden. But we're up a lot higher, and tend to get quite a bit colder.
It's a foot deep on the lawn furniture. There are snow drifts outside. It's like another planet out there.
Oh, my poor chickens, in that coop built for 110 F! I hope they generate as much body heat as I've thought. I hope that dopey hen got out of the metal nestbox and onto the perch with the others...Or maybe she's warmer in that small space.

Oh goodness! The blizzard of '93 brings back lots of memories. We had 4 feet of snow in our driveway, some of which blew there with the winds. Took us three days to dig the cars out. I could go on and on with this.
Back to this moring, it's pouring snow here, just too dark to go out and see how much so far.
Thank goodness for husbands with shovels! Good luck!
We already have over an 1" at 5:30 this morning.. Went out and took fresh warm water out to them.. They didn't seem too happy about me waking them up...
They have a huge feeder of fresh laying pellets and warm water.. We are expected to get 4" here and ice to follow.. Gotta get busy and cook some soup and stew..
Here in the upstate of South Carolina, we already have about five inches this morning, and still coming down. Very unusual for this area. The problem is, I have two coops, and the feed and water is all in the run of one coop. The other is just a "sleeping coop" for 20 chickens, because there is not enough roosting space in the first one. Normally there is a stampede for the food and water in the AM, BUT.....they are afraid of snow and don't want to walk in it. It took them a long time to get up the courage to step on it when we got our little 2 or 3 inches at Christmas.
Sigh. If hunger and thirst don't drive them out in it, I'll have to haul more food and water to the second coop. Going out now to open the doors. We'll see what happens. Got to find my snow boots!
Oh good heavens. Seriously. Put some boots on, fill up a bucket with water and walk to the coop. As much as I would love to use a little snow and ice as excuse to lock myself in the house and never do chores my animals would go without food and water for months. You have two legs? You can walk in snow, even if you're not used to it. And yes, on a hill. I live on one too.
HEY MULEWAGON! We are at 8 inches and counting on the outskirts of Chattanooga. As soon as I can figger out how to load pix, I have some of my "Alabama" coop in the snow I made this morning. I thought with the Name "Mulewagon" you might be from Ider, they are famous for their Labor Day "Mule Day" celebration! (I can pick an Alabamians, I am originally from Fort Payne, Pine Ridge to be exact).
