I have 3 turkeys, I keep them for thier beauty and because they make me laugh - especially my old tom. I would be terribly upset if I had to put him down. I have had him for many years, and he is part of my whole family's life. I don't agree with calling any animal "just" anything. He may have been a turkey, but that doesn't mean that was ALL that your bird was. My sympathy.

Well, I have this to add. On my farm there are no lines drawn between pets, wildlife, or food. We raised turkeys for food, kept some breeders as pets, we'll be eating their babies, just got our first batch of dark cornish chickens that will be raised for food, BUT every single one of are animals is treated with the same love and care and each death is felt deeply. We cried over a nest of sparrows that were killed. Life is something precious and whether you are taking it or it is taken from you, we should respect it. May you be comforted in your loss.
