Battle with a bobcat

I'm a stay at home mom and during school hours I usually spend hours with my birds. You can look thru my messages with my friends and family and all I seem to talk about is my chickens. I'm allergic to cats and we have a dog but the birds and I have that special bond mainly bc I hatched them and they spend their first few weeks of life in my room with me in their warm box so after a few days of them being hatched is when they get slightly handled more and more and of course they can see the tv and I just overly bond with them. Bert was with us for 2 years he actually came from my dad's game chickens. He will be very much missed 😢. Now I'm down to 2 laying hens which were Bert's ladies and my polish and apparently I have 4 tea cup bantams?? But my mother in law and I are sitting on the porch as I type Watching over the 3 chickens that aren't currently penned up due to they got turned loose by someone going up in our holler and took up homestead here and I cannot get close to them nor reach them where they roost. The bobcat will be dealt with along with our bear problem as we have a kill permit for the animals thru the dnr people. I secured the one for the bobcat earlier. It is now beyond personal with the predators
I'm surprised you cannot get the bear removed. My state lets me shoot animals that have done irreversible property damage, including killing a pet. Only caveat is they have to deal with the body and I cannot touch the body (bobcats and other animals you need a hunting and trapping license for). The wildlife service will re-home bears without the need to kill. Both options have no price on my side.

Sorry for your loss. A bobcat would probably do some crushing, so I am not surprised that he did not make it. I lost 3 of my remaining 11 year old chickens a few years ago to a bobcat at 2 in the afternoon. All I would suggest is to build a bigger predator proof run and keep them inside that during the day. I always have let mine free range all day long with an occasional loss during the daytime until the bobcat.

I called them when we first started having a bear problem and where we are so remote and he's not bothering anyone else they told us that if it's killing our livestock and destroying their pens and what not then we had the ok to down it but we had to call them as soon as we know it's down. Same with the bobcat. I'm half a mile just from the road and no other houses are anywhere close. Nearest neighbor is almost 2 miles. Other than the hunting cabins on up the mountain. Which they do their part to help us bc we have a 6 year who loves nothing more than to be outside playing w the animals.so they have put feeders up there to TRY and keep them away from here but it's been so dry and we are the last house before you get to the lake and campground.. I've taken all measures for my nighttime protection I have electric fence up w a new box on its way and my frobabies I call them are literally tied down and booby trapped as well at night..motion lights boards with nails. Thin pieces of tin. I've maybe gone overboard but I'd really hate to down an animal for just doing what they do. If they only knew if they was friendlier I'd give em some dog food..lol all life is a precious thing. Predator or Prey its just they need to leave my birdies alone!!

I definitely agree with you in your situation for that method of action! I'm sorry you've had to make it end with your own hands :hugs

I was a wildlife rehabilitator and treated broken wings in songbirds. We would place the broken wing back into a normal configuration and line up the bones then wrap the wing and wrap it to the body to stabilize it. I hope he recovers to get to this stage.

Can anyone tell me what to do for my Bert. He was attacked and carried off by a bobcat (beautiful cat) and I gave chase and he dropped him got away. He came out of hiding and his left wing appears broken. I love my bird enough to stupidly chase right behind a bobcat for him and now Idk what to do for him. Any advice. He's not eating either. Happened about 250pm yesterday.
😢 so sorry. Hope he can recover.

Bert didn't make it. I seen the bobcat one time since and believe me I've never been so close to something like that in all my life. I was getting ready to feed my polish flocks ( we are in the process of learning to get along I have 3 hatches that are separated and I'm trying with complete fail to get them to on board with cohabitation so any suggestions there would be very much welcomed.) Bit mr.bobcat was literally right across the creek about 4ft away just sitting there got up and walked away. My husband came out and fired a few shots and we haven't seen him or the bear. Deer have also returned. But I only have 2 laying hens left and I think they are afraid to lay an egg...
