Battling Extreme Desert Heat

Quote: WOW! That's huge. I can't imagine having that much land. I live in the Tucson city limits. I'm lucky to have a big back yard, lol.
LOL... eighteen acres is hard to visualize thats why I keep this picture around here in the city they can get eight Homes on an acre and the yards will be pretty roomy. even accounting for roads... eighteen acres could have 144 homes on it give or take.... For what its worth an acre is about the size of a football field. The zoning here is 10 acres minimum... so I could never split this land even if I want to.I am good with that because its covered with medicinals....

Its pretty cut up with deeded easements Utility easements and right of way access used for more than seven years. Ever wonder why people suddenly get upset about crossing their property line...? Thats why. I can change the boarder patrol access by giving them a new road. And probably will eventually. I actually like them on my property though. They respect fence and if they have to go in the yard they shut the gate... Being 2 miles from the border its reassuring that they are around. I dont take chances with the horse fence though. Gates are padlocked with chain.... if they need to get in they can fit between the rails or go over the top...

the road that crosses through from one corner to another is an easement... from the center of that on either side remove a swath for easement... about 20 feet parallel to that toward the lower right hand corner is Utility easement The little road that crosses from my driveway towards the west is a Border patrol road I cant block it with fence.

I have about four useable acres for livestock and that's plenty for me... Up around the house..

I bought a kiddie pool at wal-mart for less than $5. I put a 70 lb bag of sand in. It doesn't sit level so one side is about an inch deep with water. The other side just wet sand. A couple if my girls got in immediately. To encourage the others I sprinkled the sand with scratch. They love it! The one who has worried me the most with not tolerating the heat hasn't gotten out. She walks back and forth from sand to water. If she was the only one who benefitted it would still be worth it. I wish I could get a pic to upload. If you've considered a kiddie pool, give it a try. Its cheap. If your girls don't like it, not a huge loss. You can always pass it on to a neighbor with a dog or toddler.

WOW! What a spread! Waiting for more news!

Thanks... its a dream come true for me.... Back when prices were insainly high here in San Diego I had a little house on a fifty by sixty lot in town. Lived there 14 years. I was pregnant when I bought the house. As a single parent it was perfect at the time... equidistant between Grandmas for baby sitting. It was in anolder part of town and a few people had horses and pigs grandfathered in... So I had no reservations in getting my first chickens. I think by then my son was a preeschooler. Built a coop and bought four little EE chicks... We got an egg a day from each and soon we were having eggs coming out of our ears.

Dog killed them all one day... dug under chased and killed chased and killed till they were all gone. I didnt replace them. But I really missed their antics... So fast forward My son was going to start high school in 2004 IN 2003 a developer put about thirty houses in behind me speculating on the soaring prices of homes. I was standing in my back yard with my bathrobe on watching the bull dozers grading the land. The developer came up and said they had to move my fence it was not on the property line. I explained about how Buck knives had moved the fence to give me a yard.

When I moved in there was no fence and people would drive through my front yard to get to the back forty to dump garbage or sit and drink.... The land was owned by Buck Knives. Old man Buck came by one day because he had a crew fencing the property. Again I was out watching the crews. He drove up on a tractor and looked ant his map and my back yard. "Good afternoon.... I see that once we fence you are going to have about six feet of back yard .... If I move the fence out to give you an extra six feet would you promise not to build any thing in it...?" I thanked him and agreed not to build....

IF Mr Buck hadnt done the fence move I would never have had a diaglogue with the Developer. We chatted some more... and he asked "have you ever thought of selling your house?" and he explained that he had a superintendant that had lost his house duiring the then raging Cedear fire.... I said I would trade for some land and a mobile home... He didnt have the land but he had an AWESOME real estate agent.

So Long story short... I wound up selling my house to the developers Superintendent and paying cash for eighteen acres of paradise. The land was owned at the time by a Church ministry called Set Free. It is a one bed one bath house and they had 21 women living in it. All were just coming out of prison and or coming off drugs. the proiperty was too rough for their needs. And the house was used up.... litterally. But it had a roof and good thick walls doors that lock I was up to the task. They couldnt sell it for more than x amount because it had been donated to them. In order to not have to pay sales tax.

I got a very very good deal. The well was dying the electricity was wonky the booster pumps at the water tank Kind of worked and if I ran the water longer thatn 20 minutes the pump would shut off and stay off for ten days. Kitchen was and still is 8 feet square. And at the time the only thing that kept me from falling through the floor in the bathroom was the linoleum...

I had the bathroom rehabbed and that was when we found out why the walls were over a foot thick. Because the core of my house is a tin sided mobile home....

I'm going to try that in my outside run. I already have a tiny wading pool. 95 here today. 99+ for the rest of the week. Posting pics of my new nipple waterer.

Our heat is almost always humid. Its 84 today but humid. The "real feel" temps have been 99+. We had been getting rain every day. Now we can't get rain to save our lives. Ehhh. It's Ohio.

I'm itching to add some birds. Lol I replied to a rehoming add but didn't get a response. It is for a breed we really wanted. Oh well. Wish they would at least send a friendly "thanks for your interest but they found a home." At least I'd know whether to keep looking. I'm still trying to decide what to order for next spring.

Meyer Hatchery is right in Ohio...I ordered 5 kinda rares from them. They were super healthy and active even after their 2.5 day trip out here. What kind are you looking for? Edit to add that they're growing up to be really beautiful. About 11 wks old now.
