Bay Area BYCers!

Jeremy or anyone with knowledge, I have never ordered chicks through the mail before... I have had eggs shipped to me or picked up little fuzzy's or grown chickens at someone's home or feed store. I was wondering how do they identify the different chicks when they ship. I myself am terrible at identifying chicks by breed when they are little fuzzy's. Just wondering if they tag them are mark them somehow?

The different ams we are ordering have very different markings and are quite easy to tell apart. I know I thought the same thing last season when we ordered from John but felt silly once I saw pics of these little ones.

It might be a problem with other breeds but not with this order.

A lot of time they have picks of the breeds on their website. Just look at the chick pics and you should have some luck doing it that way.

PetRock I'm usually out there maybe once a month.

Main reason I go out is for my grand daughter's cheer comps. They made nationals, so I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do it, but I will probably be in Vegas in February.

Much to our dismay, pretty much have concluded that our barred rock is a rooster. Can really see the saddle feathers coming in now. Oh well.

We're looking to give him away to someone who'd like to let him live out his life, any one interested? We're in N Oakland

Here's a pic of a few from the last order we did (from John).

The ones with vivid stripes on their backs are the silvers, the yellows are the wheatons and the black ones are (obviously) the black ameraucanas. The lavender babies are pale gray as chicks. Trust me this is a piece of cake. No one needs to stress that they will get the wrong chicks.

Here's another pic taken the day the order came...

It sure was fun having all these fuzzy cheeked beauties to myself for a short time!

Congratulations pnp4kidz! Good luck on your hatch!

The only thing I would be worried about is differentiating the bantam chicks from the standard chicks. Otherwise, like SunnyDawn said, we should have much for a problem due to the differences in down color.

Norm's Chantecler chicks will be yellow like the Wheatens but they shouldn't have beards or muffs, so it still should be easy to tell them apart, too.

That and the combs. Even at that young an age the combs look very different. Did not realize that we had bantams coming though. Hopefully they are a lot smaller than the LF chicks.
