Anyone have any Speckled Sussex babies I could toss under my mama cochin? She is hatching out Fri/Sat the Blue Splash Marans eggs I bought. Cheryl, did you end up getting some as well??
I have two Blue Cochins, a Brahma, my RIR lead hen and one EE. The Wellies were smaller than the rest when I got them, and now were just a wee bit bigger than the RIR and EE. The Cochins and Brahma are BIG girls, so the Wellies always seemed much smaller. Ha! All in the perspective, I guess. Hope that all settles down for you soon!

Hi all,
I found this thread a couple of days ago and just finished reading it so I wanted to introduce myself.
I live in Suisun and grew up in ElSobrante. Just got my first chickens at the beginning of December when one of my daycare families needed to rehome their girls because they couldn't take them to their new location. I LOVE knowing that the eggs I am feeding my daughter and my daycare kiddies are fresh, and from hens who have a good life (there is proof of that everytime the kids and I go outside and I have to go around the yard scooping the poop before the kiddos step in it!) I'll be super excited when the two freeloaders start laying again (these were all laying hens when I got them and one was in a moult) so that I have excess to share

I am thinking of doing a science project style hatch at the end of February so that my toddlers can see more of the life cycle. They already know that the eggs they eat come from the chickens and that the chickens are "looking for spiders" when the get on the kiddo side of the gate, I want them to see that the chickens indeed come from eggs and get to handle the babies for a few weeks before I am forced to re-home them (I will have to re-home anything I successfully hatch as the legal limit here is 3 hens). I'm not sure where I will get eggs from yet for this project, but I know a couple of people (cousin, family friend) who have flocks and hoping one or both of them will take pity on my and gift me some eggs to try to hatch.
Anyway, after lurking in your conversations for a couple of days I thought it was about time to say "hi"! It's so nice to find a thread of people who live fairly close.

Anybody want to go gambling on Saturday at Cache Creek outside of Sacramento?
I really, really want to buy Tolbunt Polish hatching eggs, but at $150 a dozen the only way I will be doing so is if I get lucky on the penny machines.
Seriously, I'm willing to drive, my car will seat another 3 to 4 peeps!

I don't know if you would be interested but I have Easter Egger hatching eggs available right now. My Delaware girls are the only birds laying any eggs around here and they are fertilized by my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana rooster. You would get some lovely, highly productive green egg layers out of the hatch. Lemme know and I can start collecting eggs for you.
ETA: The pullets would look similar to this, with muffs, beards and a pea comb.
