Hi Cheryl,
Where did your Wheaten come from? How was the egg he hatched from? How big is the rooster he came from if you have him,or did you do hatching eggs? I have been told my rooster should be bigger.................I hadn't noticed but have been on the lookout for a bigger boy just in case. My girls lay a nice egg & pretty round too. I bought most of mine out of Fresno from Marla Ens.
Glad to read you are making progress in getting your home redone. Such a beautiful. What a shame.
Thanks,
Karen in Turlock

thanks Karen, well we are at a standstill on our home while environmental/mold testing is being done, at this rate i hope we are back in by end of summer....

The wheaten came from a #8 egg (no kidding) I still have egg shells- from http://www.fitzfarmandpoultry.net

Bev had recommended them. he's only 3 1/2 months but he is gorgeous already - really nice comb too - heavy feather footed

They are here everyone!

I literally just ran to the PO, brought them home to their brooder and then was out the door to get to work. I'm on BART now so I haven't even had any snuggle time with them yet! I will be home this afternoon around 4, those of you who wanted to pick your chicks up before the weekend expect a call sometime from me today to confirm and coordinate when you will be coming to Oakland.

There were 3 chicks that were DOA, I believe all 3 were Wheaten Ameraucanas but one might have been a Buff Chantecler that Norm ordered. I am emailing John the picture I took in hopes that he will reimburse us for those lost. I'm also hoping he can send me a list of exactly what he shipped to make distribution easier.
They are SO CUTE y'all!!!

Since a lot of us have chicks on the mind this morning, I thought that I would ask y'all what feed do you start your babies on? Our first chickens that we raised from chicks last spring we fed the Purina medicated chick starter. I've been debating going organic with these new chicks. Today is the day that I need to decide!

Debi... I honestly wouldn't waste money on the organic starter.

The term "organic" is used so loosely these days that the quality of feed is just about the same. Plus, the peace of mind I get by feeding the babies the Purina Start & Grow that's medicated to act as a preventative against things like Cocci makes it worth it to me.

Luke and I had a discussion about the "value" of "organic" feeds not to long ago, it's a bunch of hype if you ask me...

ETA: They're eating medicated starter right now, I hope nobody minds.

I did give them filtered water though!

Thanks for the answer, Jeremy! I'm just going to get the Purina one. I would love to get my chickens off of soy in the future. If it's not good for us, it can't be good for them. I would also love to mix my own feed but just don't have the time in my life right now. So, Purina medicated starter it is!

I have another question this morning. Somewhere on the forum, is there a list of feed stores by area? Where do you buy your feed from? We usually get our feed at Brentwood Feed but that is the opposite direction from Oakland. Also, we were thinking about picking up a couple more chicks to keep our three silvers company. We would love to have a couple dark egg layers like Welsummers or Marans and at least one Speckled Sussex. I am thinking about calling the feed stores between here and Oakland and ask what kind of chicks they have right now. It's chick day and I'm so excited!
