Bay Area BYCers!

They are doing fantastic! They jump right in there with their older broodmates. We just watched the 25th anniversary production of Les Miserables so we named our new little BW Cosette. She is so sweet! We've temporarily named one of the OE's Epinene and the pushiest one Diablo. We hope that we don't have a Javert or Marius but have those names in holding just in case!

Yes! See!

Judy has been on a clutch of eggs now for 2 days. I've ordered more Olive Egger hatching eggs from Monique Wagner (ruth on BYC) for her to actually hatch, they should be here by Wednesday of next week. I'm so happy! I'm thrilled that I FINALLY have a broody!

I think I've posted this picture before but here it is again, because the eggs are just beautiful. I'll be getting 12+ of these green eggs to put underneath her.

I like Cosette! I'm glad you're happy with them. I don't have anymore small BW babies at home, at least not for another week or so then I'll have more eggs hatching, hopefully.

I miss those little puffy cheeks!

I do have these babies in my brooder right now with the Olive Eggers we have from Wynette.

3 Buff Leghorn chicks from Bridgette Riddle.

I also took a couple pictures of my blue Orp girl Alice and my only black pullet Thelma, I had them scratching around in one of our new raised beds to add some poops and took a few pictures with my phone.

So cute, Jeremy. And those eggs are gorgeous.

One question, after you get your natural fertilizer from your girls, do you have to let it break down before planting anything? I've heard the nitrogen in the poop can burn plants.

Yup, that's the best thing to do. The layer of soil they pooped in is actually going to be covered by another 9-12 inches of dirt and compost. We're gonna work the poops into the current layer and the idea is that once the plant's root systems reach that depth the poops will have broken down and added their nutreints to the soil.

Ah, I see. That's good thinking!

We'll see... LOL.

I just hope that the plants don't get nice and big then end up dead when they reach the fresh poos. By the time they do though the poops won't really be fresh anymore.

This morning a hen went walking by my window...where there should have been no chickens. I went out, called the errant wanderer, and she followed me back to the "free range" yard so I could then see how she got out in the first place. Fixed the problem. I thought...

Came home tonight to find this same hen, one of my SS (from Dyann!) ON TOP of the entire fenced-in coop and run, walking on the wire covering the open run section. 9-10 ft high, maybe?? Apparently she had been persistent about sneaking out of the fenced yard the girls forage in, walking all the way around the house to the back, nibbling in the garden, and then...can't get back with the other girls. Jeesh. And we are not talking about a light weight bird here, folks. She probably weighs 8+ pounds, I kid you not. BIG hen...

This is interesting chicken event #3 for the week. Never a dull moment...

Here's the culprit..
