Bay Area BYCers!

Congrats on your eggs Kim!!! I have 2 more eggs from my Platinum Sumatra pen that I'm putting into the incubator tonight, I should start having staggered hatches around the end of the month. I'm crossing my fingers for lots of little Platinum and Dun babies!

Can't wait to see what you have. Maybe you should bring that roo out to meet my hens. LOL

Has anyone ever had a problem with deer getting into the coop / run? We've just started letting our girls do a bit of free-roaming and have left the run door open during the day. I suspected deer were getting in when I'd find the food gone too quickly and the feeder turned over. Just now my suspicions were confirmed when I caught 3 deer in the run. It got really ugly when the fawn thought it was trapped with me approaching - it started running into the coop and run walls. Anyway, is there any way to stop them other than a smaller door for the chickens?

I do, but I don't advertise or anything. I bring them in to work and to my credit union, to people who have told me they wanted some. I had a bad experience with the honor system at work, so now I hand them over personally. I only charge $2, and my friends save their cartons for me.

I'm hatching Coturnix quail today. I know you're not supposed to mix them with chickens, but I risked it for some quick pictures. This is a quail chick with a two-day-old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte chick for comparison. So cute! I have 78 of the little peanuts so far. I had to open the incubator when one was stuck under the carton all day, so I pulled out the healthy ones then. One more has hatched, and I can hear another one peeping from the shell.

New to BYC, living in SF, outer sunset.

Had a few hens that came with the house I moved into last year. I loved them but a few raccoons in the area got to my ladies. Starting a new coop with chicks arriving early April from mypetchicken. So excited to start a new coop! Anyone else in the area have good advice for raccoons?

I ordered 12, but ideally would only like to keep 6-8 after the first 6 months if anyone is interested in a new friend let me know :)

Make sure your coop and run are very secure. Use hardware wire and not chicken wire and either bury wire below at least a foot or lay an apron of wire around the parameter. Raccons will wipe a whole flock out, so make sure you have the doors and windows build soundly and have good locks. Raccoons can open most latches, so you might what to use hasps and padlocks. Also don't leave food out, like dog or cat food. They love that stuff and will keep coming around until they finally get a chicken dinner. So what did you order from MPC? I bought an order from them way back for 25 Rainbow Layer pullets. Not even my packing peanuts were roos. So nice! And Joyce who usually does customer service was always soooo nice. Heard she just got back after dealing with roblems with her terminal cancer. Sweet lady!

Jules, that pic is soooo cute! I'm kind of bad with mixing quail and chicks, but I hatch them together sometimes too. I think if things are clean it helps with them being near eachother, especially as chicks. Others would disagree, but I don't keep them together otherwise except they are all outside.

Looking forward to reinforcing my coop, looking to get a trap maybe too.

I just ordered:

1 Barred Plymouth Rock
2 White Plymouth Rock (I want to name one Camilla after Gonzo's chicken.)
2 Australorp
2 Silver Laced Wyandotte
2 Easter Egger
1 Silver Cuckoo Marans
2 Blue Andalusian (Hope at least one is true blue.)
