Any way. Can any nay area BYCer help me find out this chicken breed?

No one is guessing because you've got to post a better pic. Sorry.

You've got to get a better pic of these birds for us to be able to properly ascertain their true breed.

We can help you, but you've got to help us help you... you know??

Good Luck! Chicken pics are hard to take but I'm sure you can do it with a little help from a friend perhaps. Cheers!

Hello Bay Area!! I am in Pittsburg California (is this still considered Bay Area?), I actually just moved here a couple months ago from the wilderness of ALASKA. So far I think it is funny when people walk around in Parkas when it is only 50 degrees outside. That is T-shirt weather where I just came from.

On a more chickeny note, I have 2 Blue English Orpingtons, 1 Red Sex Link, 1 Cuckoo Marans, and 1 Buff Silkie. But I have 40+ eggs in my incubators for testing a new device and for the NYD Hatch Along!

I am hoping to find homes for these babies right after they hatch, otherwise the husband won't be happy about all the peeping in the garage. Which brings me to a question I had. Do the Bay Area people have chicken meetups? Or do you guys swap or buy locally? I have lots of nice rare LF and a few bantam breeds in the incubators and I would rather sell them to people I can meet face to face.

Anyways, nice to find you all here and I hope I am in the right place!! THANKS!!

Welcome to the Bay Area! I'm glad you found us here on BYC.

As a group we typically have get togethers throughout the year, usually in the springtime and summer. They're always fun, with plenty of food, chicken chat, birds for sale/swap and more. I don't think there was a large regional get together hosted this year... a few folks threw smaller get togethers though.

What eggs do you have cookin' away? Also, where did you get your English Orps? I have a flock of pure English BBS Orpingtons that I keep and breed here in Oakland. Orpingtons have stole my heart, they're absolutely beautiful with wonderful personalities. I would love to see pictures of your birds!

I'm sure you'll be able to find homes locally for your soon to be babies, can't wait to find out more!

Thanks jeremy! I bought my English Blue Orps from Just Struttin Farm in Novato. I wish I could get some nice hatching eggs from them but I can't have roosters. Heck, I can't even have chickens in Pittsburg CA!! But don't tell anyone, lots of us have them anyway.

I currently have 5 Basque (EO) and 5 Trader Joe eggs in one incubator. In the NYD incubator I have 10 Wheaten Marans, 8 more Basque, 6 BLRW, and 12 Lemon Blue Bantam Cochin. I am expecting 12 more Lemon Blue bantam cochin, 6+ Olandsk Dwarf, and ?? assorted color Silkies eggs. If they get here by tomorrow they will be included in the NYD hatch.

oh! you made it over! welcome. Come say hi on the northern cal thread to, these 2 threads have great people and advice ( the whole California is fun too, and I watch so cal because i used to live down there!)

Sounds like you are going to have a pretty pretty egg basket in May when those girls start to lay.

I love just struttin they have beautiful birds.

lol yeah however I will say 50 in the bay area ( S.F , OAKLAND , San Rafael ) areas right on the bay or Ocean are unlike and 50 degree temp's I have felt. I was in Novato last week with Deann at Just Struttin's xmas tree lot. It was cloudy windy and probably 50. It felt colder than it does right now up here. 30
that is why they say the coldest winter I ever felt was a summer in San Francisco.

Hi Everyone,

For those who like to plan ahead ...

** Western Farm Center, Santa Rosa has posted their chick availability list starting in March

I have always had good results with the chicks from Western Farm Center, and their staff is excellent in knowing all about chicks and chicken care.

** Azure Standard will begin delivering "Scratch and Peck Feed" starting in Jan/Feb 2013. This is organic feed from WA state, and is no corn, no soy in grain form, not pellets nor crumbles .. 40 pounds is about $29.00. Presently, the closest place to get this feed is in Sacramento, some 80 miles away.

Azure Standard also has organic Cascade Feed from Magill Ranch, OR available, not pellets nor crumbles.
Happy Holidays !!

Thank you for this update on Azure Standard! I've keep meaning to put in an order from them and this just gives me another push to get it done! Who carries it in Sacramento? We drive through Sac every so often on our way to visit friends in Placerville. I would love to try some of this feed before putting in an order with Azure.

Hi Deb,
Western Feed Supply has the Scratch and Peck Feed, in the layer and the grower version. Not sure about the chick starter nor the scratch versions. Call them to make sure they have what you need; I did and even had a bag set aside. Comes in 20 pound (around $18???) and 40 pound bags, the latter is $29.30 a few weeks ago. I go to their store on 1600 34th St at /P Street, 916-452-4741 ... easy on/off highway 50. They have several stores in the Sacramento area.

update on Scratch and Peck Feed: I called S/P to thank them for linking to Azure Standard. The S/P lady said AS just picked up a load of their feed, and it is in the layer version. We should mention to AS that it will be chick season soon, followed by "grower feed" season, et al. She thinks AS is just having the layer feed version to try out the market for the S/P product and may add others (grower, starter) later.
