Bay Area BYCers!

Tgooberbutt - we're practically neighbors! You're talking about berkeley bowl west right? I can bike there from my place! Will definitely drop you a line!

Jeremey, I lived in east oakland for 10+ years! Not super deep - in the 30 over by mills college. I just got my ducks in April and I think I'm quickly figuring out what a pain they are! Theyre cute and stuff but seriously a mess. As soon as I figure out the drakes from the hens I think the drakes will have to go. And 3-4 eggs a week from 8 hens are just unacceptable!!! What breed of ducks did you have? I have Pekings on advice from my mil who said they tend to be the most mellow.

It all depends on the type of duck. Laying ducks lay every day for years. Silver apple yards are supposed to be good for laying and table.

But most ducks are more ornamental. But I agree all are a wet mess!! We are trying Muscovites for meat this year if they hatch. But the pond is going in the easement next door so no chicks drown in it.

We shall see if it is still madness.

Yup, Berkeley Bowl west on Ashby! I cooooould bike there, but I'm one of the douches that drives an suv there...but then again I get a ton of groceries at a time :)

Unfortunately, the duck hens of any mallard-derived breed are the loudest. Drakes are pretty quiet. I love my Cayugas (and their eggs) - and I chose them because they are "a quieter" breed. The gals don't sound off very often - and when they do, it's usually a complaint of short duration, and something I should check out.

My chicken hens make more noise than my ducks.

Cayugas are also considered meat ducks, but they won't have to worry about that here.

Although I have too many drakes for the number of ducks, so MAYBE some day I will see what Cayuga tastes like... Maybe.

Haha I know what you mean about getting a ton of groceries at a time... So easy to do at the bowl!

Fertilized eggs from the grocery store?!? Say whattttttt? Lol
I hatched Fertile Eggs from Trader Joes in December, or rather my broody did. Gave her ten, threw one dud away at 5 days and all the rest hatched. I am at my 4 chicken limit (in Mountain View) so I gave them away but it was so much fun!

How hard was it to give them away? I'd love to hatch a few but I can't keep more than one or two more :(

Mountain View has a four chicken limit? Hmm... I guess it's good I am just on the Sunnyvale side of the Mt. View line. I have six bantams, although I was planning on just having four...

I don't know why, but buying store bought eggs and hatching them is really fun. More fun to explain why you're checking dates on the cartons to people who stare at you strange.
