I'm looking to "rehome" my Barred Rock young hen - 9 months old. She is great layer (one egg a day) and very friendly with people. However, she is a bit aggressive with my broody and her chicks, and I don't have the space to separate them out. I've tried numerous solutions, but have decided this may be the best option. Please PM me if you are in the bay area and interested.

I have two silver campine pullets and a bunch of straight run BLRWs if anyone is interested. We are located in Vacaville. These are the last hatches from my breeding pen before we sold those two breeds. Hoping someone local is interested

I have a mixed flock, at least age-wise. Three of them should start laying in the next few weeks, but the two youngsters probably won't get busy for a couple of months. I'm not too crazy about continuing to feed them medicated chick starter once they start laying, so can I switch everyone over to layer feed? ...even the peepers?

Nope. No layer feed for them until they start laying. Does your feed store offer a "grower/finisher" or " all flock" type feed? That's what you need for everybody until they're all laying, with a separate dish for crushed oyster shells - the hens which need it will take it. Then you can switch to layer feed when everybody is laying.

OR just continue with the "all flock" and oyster shell on the side method, which is what I do.

You should see mine. I've been mixing a mash and I though I had an AM that already had 3 rows in his comb. They're almost 3 weeks. After I scraped of the gunk the 3 rows disappeared. LOL They're all completely covered and look like the have a bad momma. I wish mine stayed as clean as yours.

Do you have photos? Would be very nice to see your puff-balls of joy. My little babies are two weeks old. Well, they look clean because I am well trained by them. Couple of times, it looked like they rolled in the food and took quite a long time to clean up those tiny toes, face and wings.. Ever since that day, when I serve their food, leave it for only 5 minutes, and also, watch them eat just in case someone decides to take a bath in the food dish..

Mine get mash and have dry started 24/7. They look like bad kids turned loose in a candy store.

Can't tell I was cleaning brooders at midnight, but tried to get picks from the 3 going now. Everyone is moving up a size tomorrow. The youngest ones are starting to get crowded. They weren't that big a week ago.

June babies


Babies from the 1st of the month. This brooder is a long locker, laid down with a 2x4 and wire lid. They have about 3 1/2 times more space. Little twerps took off and huddled in a corner. The are about ready to go out to the growout pen.




Next brooder. This one is a big plastic tub, but they'll be going into the brooder that is wood and has a big shower door for a lid.
These are from 2 to 3 weeks. OH and 7 bantam Chocolate split AMs that are the same age as the ones above, but these chicks are outgrowing them too, so they'll go in with the youngest ones. Actually, they'll stay in this tub and the LF chicks will move to a bigger one. Fresh shavings and they all ended up in the waterer. Just had to change that.



And the messy 1 to 1/2 week olds who will be going into the bigger tub with the bantam AMs.
I swear they've doubled in size overnight!


Oh and there's 2 Coturnix quail in each of the last 2.
