Bay Area BYCers!

Another question i'm cutting my egg cartons tonight does lockdown start the same time i put them in on day 1 or.....do i lock em down like in the morning. SO nervous. Cheryl my moms seriously considering a maran chick lol she is addicted now too that little BR roo is too sweet he jumps up the side of the brooder when he hears us. where did you get your fabalous brooder? i want one!!

OH you must have 2 - 3 of the maran chicks so they can keep each other company and the others don't bully them. I'll give you one and you buy the others...how's that?

Brooder came from my friends at Tru North Farm, they were selling 2 of them, greyes got the other one...BEST THING I EVER EVER BOUGHT!

Lockdown is supposed to be exactly 18 days from when you put them in, so if you put them in at 6pm which is typical for me because I let the eggs sit all day, then lockdown would be at 6pm. I say that, but I've also had times where I had to put them into lockdown a half a day or day before, due to travel. So do your best to come as close. I've had eggs hatch at day 19 - 23, so keep that in mind...patience....or a big glass of wine will help

Okay I can do this might need a drink but it will all work out. I'll have to ask my mother about the maran chicks. The brahma is my needy chick screams around at me all the time and still looks like a vulture only half feathered out. I need a good brooder. What about vaccines where do you get yours from?? And which ones do you give?

I'll be online later I have to get ready for work in a few moments...it's no emergency.. Also jefferspet has the same vaccine for $14.99 same size have to look at shipping on it.

You can buy Marek's vaccine at Sam's Downtown Feed & Supply in San Jose for about $15, it's honestly relatively inexpensive.

You're in Palo Alto, that's not too far from San Jose, just make the trip to Sam's and pick it up. That way you can vaccinate the chicks right away and you don't have to pay for shipping by ordering it online. It's best to vaccinate as soon as possible after they hatch.

As for your humidity levels, if you've filled 2 of the 3 external wells and it isn't at 65%, I would fill the 3rd well and see if it can get the humidity levels to rise. If not, then add the hot water sponge. But you must be careful not to keep the incubator open too long when inserting the sponge.

What is your current humidity reading?

ETA: If you do add the sponge, keep an eye on the humidity levels, sometimes this can throw the humidity off and it can increase entirely too much. If anything I would cut the sponge in half, soak it in hot water, then add it. As long as your humidity is about 60% you should be alright.
