I put my chicks in the garage as I want them to be cozy! They are about 6 weeks, but still, who wants to be cold when you are that small?

Mine are outside in the Barney Baby Brooder, they have a heat lamp and seemed alright. I am a bit worried about them out in the cold tonight still...

I think they will be fine, they have a lamp and each other to snuggle.

Ya know if I could remember how to use my kiln I have a vintage mold for a deviled egg platter. I've thought about casting some of those for a long time. Anyone want to give me a refresher course. LOL

So I waited as long as i could stand to candle the eggs and I was just tickled to see movement in 24 of them, I couldn't see through 3, 4 were clear and I think I might have seen a bloodring in one. Showed the three year old girls one yesterday and one of the parents, they were all fascinated too. LOL, the mom hadn't really given them a second though before, showed her yesterday and tonight when she picked up she was peeking into the bator and asking me when they are due.
We are all very excited, though when I was at Western Farm today I was looking in at the chicks and commented that if I some how mess up and kill all the embryos that are developing I will have to go back and BUY a couple of chicks for the kiddos to spend time with!

The Today show!

Just heard from The Today Show folks via Rob...

The piece that they filmed about chickens MIGHT be airing this monday. I think The Today show starts at 7am. This is what they said

"I bet you thought we dropped the chicken story. Not the case! In fact, it may air this coming Monday on Today Show! Our stories do get bumped frequently for a number of variables, but count on this coming Monday."

So it sounds like anything is possible in TV land, kind of ironic timing!

Kim, Give me a call. I lost all my bigger kilns in the fire a few years back but bought a small one that I use all the time.
I am hatching like crazy right now & try not to get too bummed too long when shipped eggs don't do well. I still don't have that figured out as well as I wish. I have 5 out from "Ruths" Monique's eggs & holding out hope for a few more but I don't think so. I have 2 White Marans out & more to come I am sure & I have one of Carrie's solid Black Marans out so far.
I am close......you can call or come over anytime & I will help with the kiln thing. Kayla & Oli can play.
Teri Gaarde is coming this afternoon. We traded eggs & she is going to get one of my extra Thom Dean Light Sussex cockerels.

Pierre was a bad boy yesterday.

Sterling has been able to free range the yard for almost two months now, but yesterday Makayla came running and said Sterling was hurt. We ran out and he had dried bloood on his shank and his face around his beak. Pierre is usually very tolerant of most other roos. Big bully.

So then Kayla goes to feed the rabbits some carrots and timothy hay and although my two Lionhead does have been penned together for over a year, Aphrodite has two small gashes above both eyes and she's been plucked bald all over and around her shoulders and in big areas of her back. I have a cage I bought at the auction that needs repair, so I grabbed it and she's inside in the kitchen untill I repair the cage. She's enjoying being closer to the fridge though I think.

I wish I could build things like I used to. Everything I'm trying to make looks like shacks. Maybe if I had the money to actually put into things I could do a better job. Wish I hadn't burnt Bill brand new drill out the first day I used it.

Karen I think when the weather is better I'm going to lay bricks outside my garage and build a platform to fire on. Mine is a big one. I have some things chipping inside from being moved to many times, but it should fire right up. I used to have one like this and sold it when my oldest kids were younger, because I never got to use it. To many little bodies running around and they were wild. I got this one from a friend that is like my other mom. She lost her eyesight and when everyone bugged her for it she called me and said it was mine. Bill ran and picked it up, but I never got a chance to use it. The only times I did use it it was at her house.

I also have some very old manuels and catalogs fom around the 60s. A friend of our gave them too me after his grand parents passed away. They owned a ceramic shop in Hayward for decades and I got lots of old molds from them. The egg platter is one of them. I have a ton of molds but have always waited until I had my own place to use any of it, but still don't have that, so I was thinking maybe I might pour some of these and sell them on here. I need to get things fixed so bad, it keeps me from doing anything fun these days.

I sympathize with you feeling bad about not being able to build like you used to Kim. I have a neighbor that has hundreds of peach bins & she sells them to me for $20. I start alot of my projects with them. I don't think you could build a 4' by 4' by 2' box for $20. They ar outdoor plywood & sturdy even if they are not pretty to begin with. You can do alot with them. I built my "Love shacks" out of them & now my new divided brooder. If something like that would help you let me know.
Hopefull (if I did it right) this is the peach bin Breeding shack
