me too! It's my first hatch, so I'm having fun.

Normally, I wouldn't post pics of mutt chicks, but I was trying to figure out who came from what egg, so I could have an idea of what color egg they might lay. I thought somebody might have fun with them.

Here are pics of my poor little hen Omelet. I let her outside for a bit and she went right to the nest box and laid an egg. She is such a dependable girl! Since then, she has just been in one place under the hibiscus bush. She comes right out when I go out with treats. I've brought her back inside in the kennel. I don't know what else to do for her.

Not yet, Jeremy. I did have several people respond on the emergencies/diseases/injuries forum. They all said that their hens also have red skin like that and that they pluck their feathers for their nest. KatytheChickenLady responded that it is not botulism. I'm grabbing on to that hope! I will send a PM to kathyinmo just to see what she says.

Hi Debi,

Is the red patch/abdomen hot to the touch? I'm definitely no expert, but I was worried at one point that my Delaware was an internal layer, and one of the symptoms was a hot abdomen. Just throwing that out there. I hope your Omelet feels better soon.

It doesn't feel hot to me and she has been laying about 6 eggs/week for the past two months. I wondered about internal laying but she doesn't seem to be swollen and there is nothing hard in her abdomen. What else should I look for? I love BYC and all the expert advice you can find but sometimes too much knowledge makes me go crazy! I have been poring over all the posts on botulism, Marek's, internal laying, bumblefoot, etc. Whew! Who knew that raising chickens could be so exhausting!
