Jeremy, how exciting! Saul and I have thought about goats too, but not until we get more space. I took a Goats 101 class at Biofuel Oasis and I have to say, there's a lot to goat-raising that I hadn't considered. It put me off just a little bit. BUT, I think I'll also take the goat class offered through The Institute of Urban Homesteading with Jim Montgomery of Green Faerie Farm, who's been raising urban goats for awhile. Just to get a different perspective. In case you're interested... http://www.iuhoakland.com/animals.html#goats

Jeremy, I caution you about goats. I love them, nothing cuter than baby goats. They may be the most mischief inclined creatures I have been around. Good luck with gardens and goats. Heavy duty fencing is required, yes even for nigerian dwarfs. As I said, I love them, they just take a different patience and diligence than Chooks. I have had people trying to give me goats for a long time. So far, I have held strong, though many more pics may sway my resistance.
That said, if you do get them, I want to come play. Few things are more enjoyable than playful headbutting and wrestling with baby goats. Good luck, Luke
Luke, I almost missed your post, this thread is moving quick today!
I've heard of how troublesome they can unknowingly be in their innocent attempts to explore and play. They would have to be contained unless supervised, especially because we live in such an urban environment. I don't quite know how our neighbours would feel if the little devils escaped our yard and started nibbling on their front lawns.
I've read a lot already, I plan on researching more and educating myself as much as possible before taking this leap... thank you for your words of caution. Who knows, if I do get them and they dont work out, maybe they would be more at home up on top if the Hidden Hill? ...
BTW, play dates certainly can and will happen!
I'm meeting with a breeder today around five, hopefully pictures and an update on how I feel after meeting the goats in person will come shortly afterwards. Wish me luck!

My husband had one goat that they named Houdini. No matter how secure the enclosure, he could get out. One night they cross tied him in a secure pen with high walls and only a 1 ft gap at the top. When they came out the next morning, the goat was free! George told me that whenever they heard their mom scream, they knew that was a goat was in the kitchen eating the fruit in the bowl on the table. The poor lady not only raised 4 rowdy boys and 1 girl but also an assortment of rowdy animals. She claims that she cannot remember a thing from those days!
