Kim has it been 2 weeks since they were alone at your place. If so yes they are pure. Never saw them lay 2 a day. Sure something else didn't get in??

The only rooster in the layer pen has been ziggy, Sir giles the coronation wasn't allowed to free range with that group.

Good for you Kim, I can't wait to be able to cut back my numbers. My feed bill is waaaaaay out of control. In fact I am off to Tractor Supply today for more Start & Grow. I think I have a $2 coupon I printed around here somewhere.
So you have more BCM??? Is that what is hatching & pipping????

OMG I have 2 $1 coupons and forgot. I'm off to pick Dakotah up and stop for feed.

I have no idea what's going on with these BCMs. The inner membrane seems so much thicker then with the other breeds. I had 7 mixed chicks out and still no BCM so I pipped them. They were wrapped so tight, when I pierced the membrane 4 were barely breathing and didn't make it. One wasn't as wrapped and started peeping as soon as the membrane was pierced and he's the only BCM I have out of this hatch. I had 14 in, but the others were late quiters about day 16. I find that so yucky when I check them.'

I'm trying to get time to take some BCM eggs to you. I think I have 13. For some reason I only got 2 eggs yesterday before I had to leave and there were birds in the boxes, so don't know what's up with that. Hopefully you can get some of these to hatch out. I sure hope so, cause 1 or 2 per hatch ain't gettin it!

I set all the other eggs last night. Finally got 2 from the new girls that I didn't drop or weren't stepped on.

OH.............Cheryl???? Which of the girls is Fanny and which is Saddie? One had more broken feathers if that helps.

I have 4 new BCM roos. All Wade Jean, but there's one with yellow legs. That seems to happen a lot with that line doesn't it? Anyway I have him if someone wants him. I think she said he is 3 months old.

Wish I has a couple of birchen hens to go with this new cockerel. I like dark birds for some reason. I know everyone love the Wheatens and I loved our roo and wish I still had hom and the pullet I hatched out with him, but I like seeing blues, lavs and blacks out there. Now those cocoa chicks???? I can't wait to see what thos look like. I thik they'll be the only ones I keep out of this mix if I get pullets. They'll be great layers. Didn't get a chocolate one though this hatch. Darn.

OK I'm off like a prom dress!!!!!!!!!

Gotta get things done.

Kim,
I haven't been on line as much since I've been sick & I have tried to make sure I keep up with the new local thread but saw this post while trying to catch up. I have Wheaten Marans due out tomorrow. If I am lucky enough to get a good hatch you can get some on them. I am assuming they were Marans you were talking about. I have both lighter & dark girls out there that these eggs came from. You really do need to make it over some time........LOL

I'm thinking about the Wheaties. Tempting and I miss Regal and the girls.

What I want to find though is maybe 2 Birchen pullets or hens, since I just got the roo. Not sure how good he'll be for breeding, but maybe a couple of years of working on them and I'll be OK. I love the Birchens.

I've saving up more eggs to send your way. I wwant as many BCMs hatched out of my girls as I can get. This 1 or 2 per hatch is killing me, not to mention taking up a lot of space in the bators for other eggs.

Working on a smallish coop and run for my black Blehm roo. He's going to get OEs, EEs and BRs to breed with. My little Favs are getting darker combs. I need to look through the Fav thread because I forget what lines they are. Just hadn't spent much time looking into those to know all the breeders. LOL

Cheryl, no way in or out. It was Sadie. I know I got her egg Sunday. I know I got it monday. She was the one in the box when I found the early moring egg and there were two later on ans there's no way anyone else was in there. They have their own secure area. Maybe I get hens that just want to give me that extra ummmph. LOL

OK I really have to stop procratinating and go get supplies to wrap eggs. I don't want to leave the house today, but I have too.

OH!!!!!!!!1

Forgot one of the reason I can in to post!

One of my BCM hens was following me around and just bugging the heck out of me. I was trying to get pics of my little roo from my project that bellied up and she just kept rubbing my leg like a dog and yacking. I finally decided to sit in the grass and ask her what was wrong. She pushed between my arm and leg and squated and laid an egg! Then she yacked a bit more and walked off! Now if I could get one of them to come in and cook their eggs, I'd be in business. But she followed me for over 10 minutes untill I sat down. Took about 1 minute to lay.

Now I think I know who lays by the back step. I used to have a WCBP that did that all the time. Now I have another one that does it.

This is what I have on file for my Wheatens from the first 4 I bought:

The breeder is Charles Logan from back east. A very long time breeder of Wheatens. Here is infor I have saved on him.

"Charles Logan has consistently developed and maintained one of the truest Marans flocks in the United States. Charles received his adult birds DIRECTLY from Wade Jean and Channing Grisham so he has the descendants of the original bloodlines. Charles' Marans are some of the most true French Bloodlines in the US Today because they where bred from the original bloodlines and Charles has kept the bloodlines separate and true to there original ancestors. The beautiful Wheaten breeding Cockerel shown below was given to me by Channing Grisham who is the current Co-editor of Fancy Fowl USA and who is a superior breeder of winning show quality poultry of all kinds. He worked with Wade Jean to create the C-2 Bloodline of Black Copper Marans which is highly sought after today. The Jean/Grisham Marans helped set the Standard for Dark egg color and correct conformation of Marans being shown throughout the US Today"

This is a quote from someone else, not me. Hope the information is helpful to you.

The other 2 girls I got from Kirstie Harris in Colfax. Those 2 are the lighter colored ones. I can't seem to locate my notes on them. I could ask Kirstie again I am sure. They may be Culpepper That is what I have her BCM as.

For those of you that live down in the San Jose Bay area I am trying to get a co-op together to obtain organic soy free chicken feed. If any of you feed organic and want to get in on this please feel free to PM me for more details.

Also, I have 4 Ameraucana chicks (almost a week old) I need to sell. I have 1 black, 1 blue and 2 splashes. These chicks are from Jean Ribbeck and Helen Baldwin who are both Ameraucana breeders. I am selling the chicks for $8ea (straight run only) and must take at least 2 chicks. Again PM me if you are interested. I am located in the south bay Morgan HIll/Gilroy area.

Thanks
Kim

Kirstie's birds I believe are from the Bayhorsebonne line of Wheaten Marans. They're suppose to be BIG birds that lay dark, dark eggs. Is that true of your Wheaties you got from her Karen?

Good for you Jeremy. I love living the country life & I know you will too. You are young & that's good because it is ALOT of work but when I was young I was up to it. We maintain a family orchard but much goes to waste which wouldn't be the case with you selling yours. I can give it to the chickens now I guess............I know they all loves my Persimmons last year.
Of the breeds you mentions I can only comment on 2
Delawares I feel are a good dula purpose LF. Easy to hatch & vigorous chicks, friendly & very curious, good layers of a nice size biege & my favorite is that they lay all winter long when everyone else has stopped. I have added Dominiques because they too do that.

The other breed would be the Light Sussex I got from Thom Dean before he sold out & went to Florida, but I have only had them since last fall. They are BIG easy going good layer Striking to look out. Again another dual purpose LF breed. The eggs are a little lighter with a whitish bloom than the Delawares.

You know Jeremy my Wheatens lay a pretty nice egg & have equaled my mixed line BCMs that's why I am trying to hatch a bunch that are due tomorrow. Their eggs sell themselves so I hope for a really good hatch.

My BCM have really improved in 3 years & I am satisfied with them especially when I considered all the money I have spent on shipped eggs reported to be so dark that arrive no darker than my own. Shipped eggs have been a sad disappointment this year.

They were all together in one pen at your friend's barn in Clayton but it has been 2 1/2 weeks since we transported them to Kim.
