My Sumatras are hatching, my Sumatras are hatching!

The cock bird is Dun colored and the hens are Black and Blue, here is the first baby that made it, I'm not sure what color it is. When I first saw a peek of it under it's "momma" I thought it was Blue, but after seeing it closer I'm not so sure. It's a very silvery almost metallic looking gray. Sort of like a Lavender chick but with no yellow down.

A second chick has hatched, it was much darker but still wet so I'm not sure what color it is either.

There is someone else with Polish out here and I can't remember who it is. At one time I had their birds and would have bought from anyone else. I wouldn't have even bought from someone who owned their birds, just from them. Why can't I remember their names???

If it helps at all. When I wanted my Davis flock of BCMs last summer, my husband (who was not a chicken person) drove me one early a.m. to pick up the flock he bought me. We left at 8am and got back just before dark. Only took a half hour to load all of the birds, so all that driving in a gas guzzling van with not AC in the middle od summer. Heck I need to birds from Reno and can't get to them. I'm dyin here .

I have a hatch going, One pipped and then got really quiet, barely moved. I finally got it out, but it didn't make it completely out of the shell during the night, so didn't make it. I had 3 others hatch before this one. One OE and 2 BCMs. These are all shipped eggs. Anyway I'm going to have to find the auction or swap, cause I have 2 yellow chicks, the OE and one from the brown eggs. Looks like my Wheaties did when they hatched. Been so busy I haven't even checked for feather shanks except on the yellow ones. More eggs in there, but nothing going on at all.

I have 130 eggs due the 19th. Think I may have been a bit carried a way. I had a roo problem as of late, so trying to get pullets for some of my breeds and colors.

I have Polish and I am in Modesto.

Nothing purebred for sale right now tho. Well I do have some 1/2 breed Polish for $2 each. I am getting rid of all my mutts.

I'm really excited to see what else hatches! This chick really surprised me, I was honestly just expecting to see darker colored babies.

Here's to hoping the other 4 eggs hatch.

jeremy, your chicks are just too cute. I love lavender and hope to add some to ,my flock one day....maybe i can buy some eggs from you when my chicks are older

Bay Area peeps:

Have any of your birds in the past couple of weeks experienced the following symptoms:
*Swollen, pink eye rims and wattles
*Bubbly eye in one bird
*Rattly breathing
*Sneezing/coughing
*No nasal or ocular discharge
*Lethargy

I'm dealing with this in my flock and it started last week in a brooder of chicks in my family room. It quickly spread to my entire flock in a matter of days.

Fearing MS/MG and other diseases, I took a handful of birds to the vet on Monday and had labs done on them which included throat swabs and blood work. The results just came in today and throat swabs were clean on all birds. No sign of virus, bacteria or infection. The blood work was also great news. None of the birds had any antibodies to MS or MG. I should note that I have a closed flock and have never brought a live bird into my city flock. The only new additions are the ones hatched here.

My vet thinks this is an allergic reaction to pollen or possibly a chemical if any of my neighbors sprayed their yards for bugs or fertilized. I need to check with my neighbors but I am leaning toward the allergy possibility

Yesterday evening, I learned to 2 closed flocks within a 50 mile radius of me that are exhibiting the same symptoms. We have never visited each others properties and we use different feed stores. They haven't done labs though but the similarity makes me think this is more than a coincidence. I am in San Jose and the other flocks are in Morgan Hill and San Mateo.

I am hoping to find out if anyone in the Bay Area is also having these types of issues to try to get to the root cause.

My birds are all on the road to recovery and are doing much better. Some still have some swelling in their eye rims but are more spunky, alert and are back to eating me out of house and home

Any ideas are extremely appreciated.

Bravo, I haven't seen any symptoms in my flock but I will certainly keep an eye out.
