Bay Area BYCers!

Quote:
Beef up security as noted from above, then see if you can start with some that are a little older from someone on here. A lot of us hatch more than we need. (Except for me, I can't seem to part with any of mine!) You should be able to find some that are a few weeks old. They would also be better quality usually that what you get at the feed store.
I have a boarder at my barn that is selling some young hens if you want to spend a little more for a laying flock. I think her hens are 20 -25, except for the Black Copper Marans, which are $40.

Darn Diana - I frequent the feed stores in your area, and when I was getting into chickens a year and a half ago, I could not find Silver Laced Wyandottes anywhere! They are so beautiful, and are supposed to good layers and friendly - lucky you. I ended up with Barred Rocks and EEs, and now have blue rocks and BBS Ameraucanas - you will like the Barred Rocks, they are good producers and friendly, but if I were giving some away, I would definintely keep the silver laced. Did you get those at Tractor Supply, Higbeys, or?

AmCanyonStables:

We got them at Higby's on Thursday, just four days ago. The silver laced were $2.95, because they were only 2 days old at the time. We've already named one of the Silver laced 'Zippy' because he zips around the brooder like Speedy Gonzales (does that age me or what? lol) We're already thinking of keeping Zippy and the golden laced, who is an absolute sweetheart.

We just lost our old matriarch last year, she was so old, over 10 years, and she was a Barred Rock and just wonderful. Our others are EE's and a frizzle standard cochin hen.

Wolftracks: Chicken math is something, isn't it?

I still think of myself as a Bay Area gal, living in the flatland. I sure don't miss the traffic though!

Hello all,

If anyone here in Oakland or nearby has hatching eggs available, I'd be so grateful. I've got useful buckets and barrels, as well as honey from my bees for bartering. I'd also be happy to purchase them outright, but I really need to get them today or tomorrow (Monday) and put them under my broody before she wears herself out on the fakes. PM me and I'll give you my phone number. I'll drive pretty much anywhere in the east bay if it means I can get them soon (although I'm really hoping Jeremy might have something beautiful...

Many thanks!

Wish I was going your way. Honey! OMG! Barrels? dang it! LOL

SimplyScrabled yes the chicken math is kind of hard to avoid. I like adding better than subtracting though so it works. LOL

We get traffic out here but it's different. I learned to drive on 880 when it was still 17. It's changed a lot, but even though more drivers there and some don't know how, out here I think there may be 10 drivers that actually should have past the driving test. The others just a license so DMV didn't have to deal with them again. haha

Some pictures from today, mostly of my Blue Coronation Sussex babies. I'm pretty sure I have a pair.

My Platinum Sumatra chick, I'm thinking it's a pullet!

This chick is one of the SWEETEST, most curious youngsters I've ever raised. She'll hop right onto your hand, then onto your shoulder and the top of my head. I'm trying to figure out what to call her... I'm scared to give her a cute little girl name though because I keep thinking I'm going to jinx myself and she'll turn into a cockerel. Then she would have to go live with Luke...

My beautiful Black and Blue Copper Marans from Monique Wagner.

My Black Copper girl is a bit mossy, I'm hoping that's indication that she'll lay super dark eggs though... that's at least what I've read. They came from gorgeous deep red/brown eggs.

My Blue Copper girl, Ponyo. She's a bit smaller than the Black but I LOVE her color.

And this is Yvonne, one of my oldest and first chickens. She just had to be nosey and try to eat the camera the entire time I was outside.

Jeremy,
You take such nice pictures of your lovely girls.
Is Monique Wagner "Ruth"on BYC? I have some of her birds that I hatched earlier this season. Mine present very black with alot of bottle green. No hackle color at all. I waited for her to have & send eggs from her "best" pen & like the birds very much but ordered them for the dark eggs she wins with. She has them dividen in 3 different pens according to the quality she values them for. I am going to keep all my BCMs girls from this season's hatches that I have gathered from many different BYC breeders across the states. I get so many calls for BCMs & have been unable to even begin to keep up. I hope to do better next season.
