Bay Area BYCers!

I like them a lot actually.

I love the barred red color.

They're an auto sexing breed like the Cream Legbar.

How many breeds to you plan on breeding Cheryl? Is Sienna Ranch going to continue to let you keep birds there?

...we introduced into the breeding flock both production and traditional strains of American Rhode Island reds.

Just noticed that line from the description.

So will you be getting pure Rhodebars or are you getting the Rhodebar X Rhode Island Reds that GF mentioned?

Will you then be breeding back towards the auto sexing nature of the Rhodebar?

If you're getting eggs, why would you need a roo sent to you?

Because the line started here with pure roos and as the UK breeders point out, you breed them back to quality rhode Island red stock to diversify. The resulting hens that I hatch will need to be bred back to the father to create pure offsprings and then you continue to line breed until you have enough generations to breed together. No different than what many people do when breeding other breeds.

From UK breeders "Get good utility Rhode Island Red hens and you can put your Rhodebar cockerel over these hens. The offspring from this mating will give you pure Rhodebar hens but the cockerels will not breed true. Next, put your pure Rhodebar cockerel over these pure Rhodebar hens. The offspring will now all be pure and you can continue with your line."

So you won't have pure/auto sexing Rhodebar offspring until next year when the hens you hatch are mated back to the Imported rooster.

Cool, this is what I was trying to understand. Thanks.
Sounds like a fun project!

Have you considered getting another line of Heritage Rhode Island Reds to introduce next year, too?

The hens that I hatch are considered pure, but not the roos as it states above.

No I don't have to go back to RIR again, that's already been done, Should have pure offspring March 2012

I'm especially excited about being able to work with these because there are so few left in the world. Sort of like my mille fleur leghorns.
