Bay Area BYCers!

Can anyone help. Where my husband and I live the landlord has decided to sell the property. I have about 20-25 chickens I need to re-home. Not sure how much longer we will be here so need to start the process now. For right now I plan on keeping my laying hens and some of the chicks that I hatched out this year. But I'd like to re-home my roosters now. I would like to get $10/bird for the roos. I have the following:

2-black stars around 1 1/2yrs old (they look like barred rocks but are not). These guys are fertile as I have hatched 2 batches of chicks this year from these guys
1-Anocona about 8 months old
1-Lavender Ameraucana (this is a true Ameraucana, not an EE). This one might be spoken for already.

If you would like to get on the list for my hens when I decide to re-home them that is fine. I would like to get $15/bird for them. If you are interested in them email me and I will put you on a list when I re-home them. The list will be on a first come first serve basis. Here is the list of hens I have. All of these birds I have hatched out myself. Some are mixed breed while others are pure.

1-White Ameraucana (purebred) around 3yrs old
1-Silver Ameraucana (purebred) around 3yrs old
1-Silver leghorn, not 100% sure of her breed around 3 or 4
2-Production Reds (1 is about a year old, and other is about 7 months), one is a deep mahogany color like a RIR but not a true RIR, the other is more of a orange/yellow color
1-Black mixed breed 7 months old
1-Easter Egger she is barred color 7 months old
1-Silkie/Ameraucana mix about 2yrs old

The chicks that I have are some Lavender Ameraucana's as well as 2 Black Ameraucana's. Don't know sex of these guys yet and plan to keep 2-3 of these myself.

If you can help I would greatly appreciate. Please email me at horsebodywork at care2 dot com and I will get you on the list or if you want to take one of the roos I'd like to find them new homes now.

Thank you
Kim

Poor Barbarella got her foot caught somehow in something (we don't know what!) and tore a toenail off on her right foot. I panicked and, after rinsing it and spraying bluekote, drove her down to the local veterinary hospital. They checked her out and gave me an antibiotic foot soak to use twice a day for 7 days. The vet said he wanted to try that before oral antibiotics so we could still eat her eggs. I told him that if she needs oral antibiotics to avoid infection, to go ahead; we can tell her eggs from the others, and her health is more important than the eggs.

She's doing fine - just scarfed down a cooked egg I gave her for some extra protein. Any other suggestions for helping her heal up? I'll probably add some vitamins to her water or give her some yogurt. I've got her in an isolation cage - thank goodness my millefleur girls are out of quarantine.

On the other hand, you can call me "Bluefinger". I sprayed myself while spraying her foot. I also found out one shouldn't spray bluekote on your sink. It stains. Oops... Live and learn.

ETA: The vet said she seemed very healthy otherwise, and all the other vet techs kept coming around to pet her and talk about how pretty she is.

Okay - I have to share because my boyfriend is gone for the weekend at drill and our four dogs thought I had lost my mind this morning!

I found my first eggs!!! Little darlins, but htey are eggs!! I think my two Buff Orpingtons and my Black Astralorp are giving me the presents.....but I'll have to watch some chicken t.v. this weekend to try and figure it out!! I'm very excited!

And I think more oyster shell is needed because two of them had little cracks on the ends.....or maybe just more shavings in the nesting boxes for cushion?? I went out to do my morning check and all three boxes had eggs in them!!! Go ladies go!!!

Well folks, il Pollaio is undergoing renovation today. We're putting up a new roost. The old roost went the width of the shed - 5 feet and it's getting a wee bit crowded with 10 hens on it!

Especially since a couple of them are still growing girls. So we're taking out the old roost and putting in one the *length* of the shed - 10 feet. And a better poop board underneath.

This should improve happiness for the girls. Oh, and, of course, DH's response was - oooh, that means theres room for more chickens right?

and starts calculating...

I think this Spring the Faraday Coop is going to get an expanded run. Instead of having the run on one side of the coop only, I want to dig up and extend it to both sides of the coop. That'll give them plenty of room inside the run in cases where we can't let them out to freerange.

In other news, Barbarella escaped from her cage last night

and was up on the roost with the rest of the girls. I did ask DH to keep them in this morning until I had a chance to grab her and get her foot soaked. And then she went back in the cage. I think DS forgot to lock it properly when he put her in last night. Either that, or we've got a far too clever pullet... With her Barred Rock attitude and brains, if *any* chicken were to figure out a latch, it would be her. We're expecting her to start using the cat door into the house any day now... I'm just happy her foot looks fine this morning. She was really mad when I put her back in the cage. The doc said it's only for 24 hours... So tonight, I'll let her up on the roost again after we soak her foot. Then she can just go back to freeranging with the other girls tomorrow.

Folks, I'm putting together a tentative agenda for the Chickenstock party right now, I'll try to have a rough draft posted this evening. I need some help though...

I'm looking for chicken themed games (ex. egg spoon race) to add to the afternoon's festivities. Any ideas?

Also, the last time I checked there were only 25 (ish) people signed up for the party on the Google spreadsheet...

So I feel it's time to start spreading the word about our little get together. Our picnic site can hold 130 folks, so start telling your friends!

Cheryl, do you mind bringing tickets to the party this year for the donation's raffle? If not I can pick some up at a party supply store.
