Bay Area BYCers!

Adorable chick! How old is she Jeremy? I have 10 in my brooders (2 hatches). I love the diversity of colors. Very interesting. I think, however, that my brabanter chicks have the market cornered on mohawks hairdos, however :)

Do you guys ever meet for coffee in the East Bay? I can't make Sat after all (I have some people coming over to buy chickens...) but would love to meet my chicken neighbors.

Well, what worked for me last year was, "We have to get more because they are straight run and some of them will be cockerels which can't keep." 3 ended up being boys and 5 girls. Then I used the broody hen reason when our head hen went broody and we bought 3 sexed chicks to slip under her. This year, I won 3 chicks from Cheryl at the Oakland Chickenstock. But if I'm going to brood 3 chicks, I might as well raise a few more. It's pretty hard to hide chicks when they are in a brooder in our family room! Plus, he enjoys watching the chickens in the backyard and would sure notice a sudden increase in number. Those Swedish Flower chicks would be hard to miss! Monet is begging for some White Crested Black Polish chicks which would also be hard to hide! I just need to keep pushing DH to find us some land with a small house on it!

I used to raise Polish and when my husband saw the first ones he laughed like crazy and told me those weren't chickens. Later he like watching them. Not sure he was always excited though when we had to take the flashlights out and find them to put on the roosts at night. Goofy birds. I want more space so I can have more of them. Mine laid like crazy and were so fun to watch. I had a 4lb Toy Poodle (Taz) who used to go out and hang with the birds. He was a black and white abstract. When the birds got treats he was right there with them and it was to funny to see all the feather poofs and then one fur poof.

LOL! Kim, that must have been funny to see! We have a similar thing that happens around here. Our young dog must think that she is part chicken. She begs for their food and when I toss shelled sunflower seeds, she is right in the middle of the chickens gobbling them up. We had her spayed last week and an additional benefit of the E collar/cone is that it lets the chickens know to move out of the way of her mouth.

Here she is with her flock (Please excuse the messy patio. It is a constant battle to keep it cleaned off!) :

I would like everyone to meet Jessica, my Swedish Flower Hen chick.

I'm pretty sure she's a pullet and I think she is just about the cutest chick I have ever seen.

I have a chick that has a toe like this one has on the right. Is that considered crooked toe, or does that correct itself? Walt do you know?

Debi, don't forget to let me know what kind of chicks you are wanting...

My B/W rooster Claude has a crooked toe but his girls lay the prettiest blue egg. I have been told that can happen in the incubator & isn't necessarily genetic????
I am getting my first eggs from my B/B/S Ams from assorted breeders across the country & so far I have a blue one darker than Sophie's (B/W Ameraucana) , a bluish green one & a darker green/gray one.......
