Bay Area BYCers!

Karen they are trying to find a part for my car. It won't be done till at least tomorrow afternoon. The eggs got here and I still have them in the bubble wrap. What time are you leaving tomorrow? I need to drop these off, pick up chicks from Denny and birds from you. If things don't get completely crazy, I think I may drive to Stockton tomorrow night and stay. I just hate taking up space for clothes, etc. when I need space for more chickens! LOL

Denny is coming tomorrow but we aren't leaving for the show until Saturday morning. We have 6000 lbs of custom mixed feed to pick up from the Seed Factory. Denny is bringing her big truck. I may have to make a couple of trips with my SIL pickup but the mill is really close to me. We are going to the banquet Saturday night & then staying over & coming back on Sunday.
I just had a man call me from the 916 area code area asking about the show. I have a Craiglist ad selling A & M Quail & I wrote that I will be gone all day Saturday to the Stockton Poultry Show & he called just to find out about the show...................No quail, just where is the show??? LOL I am happy to promote the hobby..!!!!!

LOL I did the same thing at the auction on monday.

Man I wish I had a way to buy and store large amounts of feed. Maybe once I get moved, I hope.

Oh and Makayla has been so excited about seeing Olivia. We were talking about how last year's show was when they met. She's really into math right now and says "WOW! Grandma, I've known Olivia for 1/6th of my LIFE!"

OK glad you'll be home tomorrow. I need to take the bubble wrap off of these eggs and let them set overnight till i get them to you. I can't believe how excited I am about these eggs.

OMG! Jeremy that is the cutest thing!!!!

BTW, you'll be surprised to see how well they run the barn. Those birds won't last long, maybe not even in the door before you sell them. But, they are so good at running things, there's no reason to worry and miss other things. You can also put your cell # on the holding cages and get calls from buyers. Just breath. And bring me that chick! LOL

Thanks Kim, she's my favorite chick that I hatched.

How adorable!!!! Love her uniqueness!!! Now I really wish that I had bought some of those chicks that I saw on Craig's List!!!

Do you want to order some eggs together Debi? I'll hatch 'em and then we can split 'em like we did with the OEs from Wynette?

Yes, I am enabling.

Adorable chick! How old is she Jeremy? I have 10 in my brooders (2 hatches). I love the diversity of colors. Very interesting. I think, however, that my brabanter chicks have the market cornered on mohawks hairdos, however :)

Do you guys ever meet for coffee in the East Bay? I can't make Sat after all (I have some people coming over to buy chickens...) but would love to meet my chicken neighbors.

Jessica hatched on New Year's Day, so she's almost a month old. Do you have any pictures of your SFHs?

I think meeting for coffee would be great, there's a lot of chicken farmers in Oakland, not many here on BYC but I have a few contacts. If anything I'd love to sit down with you and have a cup while chatting chicken. Just name your favorite place!

I used to raise Polish and when my husband saw the first ones he laughed like crazy and told me those weren't chickens. Later he like watching them. Not sure he was always excited though when we had to take the flashlights out and find them to put on the roosts at night. Goofy birds. I want more space so I can have more of them. Mine laid like crazy and were so fun to watch. I had a 4lb Toy Poodle (Taz) who used to go out and hang with the birds. He was a black and white abstract. When the birds got treats he was right there with them and it was to funny to see all the feather poofs and then one fur poof.

Kim, I want to start breeding Polish. I'm trying to decide between Tolbunt or Buff Laced. It'll be a breeding venture that has to wait until we have more space though, living in Oakland I can only have so many birds. Unfortunately.

I have a chick that has a toe like this one has on the right. Is that considered crooked toe, or does that correct itself? Walt do you know?

No Cheryl, that's not a crooked toe.

This is though.

There's a conversation right now over on the Swedish Flower Hen thread discussing why so many people are hatching chicks with curled toes. A lot of folks are saying that it has to be a genetic issue, that the SFH are too inbred and this is one of the signs pointing to that. Others are saying that it's just an incubation issue and another theory brought up was that these birds may need different nutritional requirements than what American commercial poultry feeds provide.

The chick above will probably be culled. I think it's a cockerel, it isn't having any difficulty keeping up with it's other hatch mates but I feel like it's toes may slow it down in the future. I really don't want to cull it but I don't want to see it suffer over time due to it's deformity.
