BBB Turkeys

Sweet! Mine are both gone now, too. Thanksgiving (tom) was 36 lbs. dressed. Christmas (hen) was 22 lbs. dressed.

60x100 is a big run - but I think that's what you need to really do it right for turkeys. That's the only thing that is stopping me from ordering some heritage turkeys for next year - the prospect of having to build another large run for them!

My biggest tom was 26 pounds dressed, but we still have one left that will by far surpass the first one. He just got lucky and got left over, we'll have him here soon.

The hens were 17 pounds and 18 pounds.

Yes I am hoping for a BIG run, they'll get to come out for free-ranging, but I think it's better for poop management if the run is larger. They are in an approx 25 x 35, and by the gate can get pretty dirty. I like my animals to have a lot of room.

I've been collecting chainlink off Craiglist for good prices since I still have a while 'till the babies come. Now I just need to finish the coop.

Broad Breasted Bronzes (and Whites) are not heritage turkeys, they are commercial varieties that have been selected over time to have extremely big breasts and therefore cannot reproduce naturally. They must be artificially inseminated in most cases. If you want a natural turkey you can breed you need to look into the heritage breeds like Royal Palms, Narragansett, Sweetgrass etc...

A really cool place to check out Heritage Turkeys is porterturkeys.com.

Hope this helps!

I have a order in with Porters for SweetGrass and a special of a variety that he had on at the time
