@R2elk
I have an indoor garden question. Im using my 29 gal tank as a planter. How do I manage drainage? :)lol:) It was the only option I had available. I put in nasturtiums and carrots. Need to find either a lettuce mix or cherry tomato seeds too.
I don't. I monitored the moisture of the soil and add more water as I feel is necessary. It can help to put a layer of fine gravel on the bottom. For most indoor plants a depth of 8" of soil is the most that is needed.

I check the water needs of my potato plant in a 5 gallon bucket by pressing the back of my hand on the top of the soil. If it feels moist I leave it alone. If it is starting to feel dry, I add water.

Once you have mature plants with fruit on, you will be surprised by how much water they go through in a day. One particular tomato plant I had was going through 3 gallons of water every day.

As far as tomatoes, do not plant an indeterminate variety. Those will get far too big.

I have had good luck growing Romaine lettuce in pots.
