My Rhode Island Red quit laying a week ago. She started picking on other birds also. This morning I noticed part of her beak gone. She looks like she has lost weight also. Any ideas?

A few months ago I thought my hen's beak was chipping away. But it stopped and it's all like new now. I did put some ointment on it for a few nights. I would check her crop several times a day if possible or at night to see if she has food in there.

Chickens do have times of non laying, some more than others. When it gets real hot, I get fewer eggs.

Maybe you could isolate her in a large cage in your coop and run with feed and some water added to make it like oatmeal. Use a bowl with taller sides, such as a dog bowl. Put water in the cage also. Watch her for a couple days to make sure she is eating better. Her time in the cage may also lower her pecking order so that she quits being a bully. Here is a link on how to trim a beak: http://pathfindersfarm.com/Beaktrim.html
