Bear-proof Chicken Coop

As everyone else is saying I think electric fence is the only option, bears are just to strong (I mean cmon they're BEARS!)
One year vacationing in the Smokey mountains my dad put the trash out in the evening into the the "Bear Proof" garbage cans!
Well a bear came that night and got into the trash by prying open the lid on the hinge side which was secured with 6 3in deck screws in pressure treated 2x4s.

as everyone said electric fence. I would put one around the perimeter of your property, then and additional one at the coop, keeping coop as far away from the first outer perimeter fence.

3 lines at least 12 inches from ground, 24-30 inches and then at the top and lots of signs so children dont get hurt.

Do they hunt in the day or at night? if at night you might be able to get away with just turning on the fence during the dark hours.

Having never dealt with bears but having read a bit about them my thought is that maybe the first electric fence will keep them from ever getting close enough to the coop where they will have far more motivation to break in.

bigger the gun more the fun im thinking AR15 armor pearcing rounds alot of them cause if you cot bears who knows what else you have running around your place! besidesyou dont have to get close with an Ar jmo!

When you talk about testing the electric fence to make sure it is working, a good voltmeter will do it you already have it as part of your tools. I found that by checking between the hot and ground, anywhere in the system, you know what will hit the intruder at that point. The quality of the ground makes a difference as to the voltage that will flow as well. If the ground area is damp, you get a lot harder kick than if the ground area is dry. I have seen in severe dryness, there is virtually no real kick or deterrent. Get the ground area wet so juice can flow and it will knock one right on their rear.

Electric fencing is your only option...you really cannot stop a bear from getting inside because they are so strong and persistent. But, you can keep them away from it...

Have you considered a livestock protection dog? I had problems with a bear ripping off doors and smashing fencing while attemptingto get to the sweet feed. Thats when I brought in a Great Pyrenese.. Since then no more bear or any other predator problems (had a neighbor dog kill a bunch of birds the year before)

Is it possible to make something bear-proof or do you just try to make it more trouble than your neighbors' places? Black bears are even busting into homes in Lake Tahoe -- 50 incidents in the first six days of August.

Bears are just so strong and persistant I think you would really need an electric fence and/or some other kind of strong deterrent. Maybe that sound deterrent thing, you that mosquito teen deterrent thing they developed to keep teens from hanging out at stores or whatever and now the kids love it, you know that mosquito sound thing. just google sound deterrent. There are loads of sound deterrents now a days. here's the link to the mosquito thing. or a bird deterrent thing, or maybe an LRAD haha lol. here's the link to the mosquito thing. http://www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/ my thinking is that the ultra sonic sound waves or whatever may irritate the animals ears enough to deter it from attacking. although I like just realized a bit ago that you may not want to hurt your ears or your other pet's ears. and the bird deterrent would most likely irritate your chickies since they are after all birds. but hey it's worth a shot. plus it won't harm the bear, just irritate it. good luck.
