bear repellant?

I know sounds like a silly subject title! But I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to property or coop to deter bears? Some kind of scent? Or bells? Or anything? A black bear has been around, and yesterday was banging on our neighbors garage trying to get in. Our coop is in our pole barn/garage..... so I'm pretty sure they're safe in there. But I just don't want it coming around.. esp. in the middle of the day. I don't mind at night when the kids aren't out.

I have not heard of a bear repellent except for pepper spray that some hikers carry. Which leads to some jokes.

Controlling garbage is the secret- all grease/bones/fat/meat/fish/poultry/grain should be frozen and put out only at the time of pickup. Containers need to be scrubbed and kept pristine. We have black bears nearby and they don't come to our house because we know what they like and won't offer it. The general store entertains a male periodically because they put the fast-food scraps out in bins. A bear can rip apart a shed and destroy any bin known to man! Oh and discard soiled poultry feed far away from your coop.

The best repellant that I have found that works very well on all animals is an electric fence.

Now forgive me, but I am not talking some whimpy little sting-em deal, if you get my meaning.

Simply put, if they presist it is lethal.

remove all temptations, especially chicken feed, they love it! Just pick up, pour some amonia around, it will offend their noses, lol, like they offend out noses. Bird feeders, food etc. And then, contact your wildlife dudes and have him removed, tagged and relocated to be someone else's problem- don't send him to me! Please no!

If you have read any of my postings about bear, you will find that a good electric fence will slow them down. My two friends (Smith & Wesson) will stop them. Like some others have said CLEAN UP everything. Once a bear starts coming around, it WILL be back. A problem bear is NOT relocated as some believe. A bear could care less about pee, dog or human. My leach line runs down the hill next to the fence around the chicken yard, and my dogs go where ever they want on the property. I have actually watched a bear roll in the leach line waste. Putting something in a freezer does nothing but give the bear a cold meal if it wants it. If you have ever been to Yosimite and listened to the speech the ranger give, you know that a bear can smell a can of tuna a mile away. This is the reason they have lockers for you to put your food in. They keep the bears out. They are made of 3/8 steel plate with welded heavy duty hinges and locks. I have had the state and federal trappers here and I will tell you what they said is the best way to deal with bear. Forgot I already did, SHOOT IT, BURY IT AND SHUT UP. I will NOT put any photos of a dead animal on the web (out of respect for them) but I have and will send photos of what the trap looks like being set up.

Lock the birds in at night,store all traces of food along with occaisionally raking out the run,and thee electric fence seems like a good idea especially with bears moving towards neighborhoods in search of EASY food.....luckily I'm on thee outskirts of a small town and the dolts in the township are still putting suet out for the tweety birds,easy bear munchies.
