I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post, maybe it belong in breed discussions? So I bought eggs and hatched them, I hatched 5 silkies and the rest are mixed. Possible roosters were silkie, barred rock, easter egger. The hens could be pretty much any breed. I'm including some photos of the cuties that have hatched. I'm wondering if someone can tell me if they are bearded of just have muffs or neither. Thank you in advance!

The one in the first two pictures I'm leaning toward probably not having a beard but I could be wrong. All the rest look like they have beards, some just may be bigger than the others. 😊

From what I understand (someone correct me if I'm wrong), the Muff & Beard gene is not separate? At least in my Ameraucana it works together.
Heterozygous inheritance results in smaller beards & muffs, homozygous inheritance presents the best of both.

@NatJ ?

I see clear muffs on all those chicks.
My understanding mostly matches what you said: one gene, called "muff beard" allows both muff and beard.

I am not sure about heterozygous vs. homozygous causing different sizes of muffs & beards. I have seen photos of birds that run counter to that, in both directions (heterozygotes with big ones, homozygotes with small ones).

There must be some other genes that affect the size of the muffs & beard, but I don't know anything specific about them.

Thank you all! I am so excited to see what these chicks will look like when they are grown! 😁I think the beards are the cutest things everrr! And it's hard to tell on chicks since they are so fluffy, so I tried to look for "chicks with beards" on Google to see if mine looked similar. The results were not what I was expecting 😳🤣
