Im up here in nw pa and bears are about. My dh works for a garbage company and has found alot of trash that was gotten by bears. On morning the can had been dragged into the woods a few dozen yards. Also one morning saw something that initially looked like a black dog till he really looked. Swears looked more wolfish. Never know whats around.

Well, actually, several people have posted on here about bears ripping open their coops and eating the chickens, which is why the idea freaked me out a bit... though the bear and human populations are lower in Alabama, than in the states that were reporting problems. So maybe all I have to worry about are coyotes and dog packs. And raccoons and possums and armadillos and weasels... And maybe panthers and wolves unless they're too full from eating the other guys
Mr. Giant Puppy has hit 60 pounds at five months, and is cutting his big-boy teeth. So maybe I can soon sneer at any bears and whatnot that come along the creek
(It's odd how comforting a big dog is at night in these woods!)
Fish & Game won't do anything till there is a attack or someone gets hurt.
hopefully the ruckus your dog will make will be enough to keep them away. Yes black bears are skittish but the last statistic I saw showed more people up here are killed by black bears than Griz because they assume a black will run! A Griz you either kill or steer clear of because you assume he wants a fight.
As a possible deterrent, get a few cans of Off bug dope or similar that are pressurized and cake them with bacon grease. Set them where a bear will get them but not your dog or most other predators. (in a wire cage nailed on a tree?) If a bear comes thru, it will go for it, he will bite the can and when the can blows, it will decide the taste in his mouth is more important than your birds. Now you have run off the bear and have proof for Fish & Game that it's a problem.
I never heard of that one before. Has it worked for you. I've lost all of my flock and rabbits on three occasions to black bears that wouldn't take the bate in the live trap over fresh chicken and rabbit meat. They also destroyed my pens each time so it's an uphill battle. I just put up some portable electric netting around the coop this year with a charger from a garage sale and my dog has learned to respect it tonight along with a good ground with the fresh rain but haven't seen what the bears think of it yet. (poor dog ) Bug dope will be my next thing to try if you've seen it work for you.

I can say you are absolutely right!
Fish & Game will do nothing but tell you to "bang pots together" & "teach your children not to run", oh & let's not forget the wonderful "Make yourself look bigger" advice
Thank you! I've been plagued with several mama bears w/ cubs & the male for 3 years now.
Last summer I was nose to nose with the male on my back deck & believe me there was no time for banging pots!
Anyway...
I noticed some bear droppings (is there a better way to say piles of bear poo?) around the girls coop about a week ago & have been racking my brain trying to figure some way to keep my girls safe. No, I can't afford electrical fencing, but I can afford bacon grease & Off!

We had problems with a bear breaking into cabin to lick the grill clean, tried the bug spray idea a friend suggested and never saw that bear again!
Did notice there was some ground tore up where the cans were sitting!
This is what was posted in the paper on Tuesday. "Police spent much of the overnight hours chasing a bear through the Ensley area of metro Birmingham." They are getting closer!
