My chickens free range during the day letting them out around 11 and they put themselves back in the coop around 5:30 during this part of the winter. My six hens do lay their eggs in different parts of the farm as well as in the coop where I wish they would lay all their eggs...lol. I've had my "flock" around 3 years. Yesterday I saw the most lovely thing that I had never seen before. My rooster was sitting next to my favorite hen cooing or purring next to her while she was laying her egg in some hay right next to the barn wall. I was very moved. I sent a text to my friend who I bought him from...her response...wish I could find a man like that! lol

What a sweet boy! I got ten Littles in early June and one turned out to be a little cockerel (Buff Orpington). So far Gerard is turning out to be a very good boy (he’s not too rough with the girls and has so far shown no interest in my two Polish (I was worried because they’re so small and he’s so big). He also seems to leave the older hens alone who make an effort to avoid him). And he likes to jump up onto my back (when I’m leaning over to pet someone) and hang out up there when I’m in their coop/run :p.

I am constantly amazed @ the behaviour of my Speckled Sussex rooster. He escorts the hens to the nest box then runs back to the other hens. He also replies to the hens when while she is laying or just layer an egg & seems to be very excited.
He has sorted the bad behaviour @ the nest boxes (ie all trying to use the same nest box).
Today as I mentioned in the post about letting hens brood in the main pen nest box, he shooed the broody hen back to the nest who was trying to follow the other hens out into the yard.
I am planning to move the broody hen to a kind of brooding pen tractor (mobile brooding pen) placing it next to the main pen insight of the flock & I hope that she hatches the eggs out because I’d love to see the roosters reaction.
