Bedding besides straw or shavings

Shavings are a little expensive and I have heard stories on here about chickens eating straw and becoming impacted. What other alternatives are there? Am I worrying too much about the straw?

Don't know about where you are, but here shavings are about $6 for a BIG bag.

I have straw, hay, ansd wood shavings in my barn. never had a problem with any of them

Pine shavings are about 7$ for a rather small bag here.

We have been using straw in our coop for a little over a year now with no problems. We do clean it out and put fresh straw in every week.

I use the equine pine pellets. Love that stuff!

Have you tried looking around for shaving, I found one place that had a 4 cubic foot bag for $12 and then I found another that had a 5 cubic bag for $6 just down the road.

Where are you getting your shavings? Yes, ones from the pet store are very expensive. I buy mine at the farm supply. The shavings are marketed for horses and cost $5 for 5 cu ft compressed.

This may not apply to you, but whenever we use a chainsaw to cut up firewood we rake up the shavings and use them in our coops. Try looking for a local sawmill, I know sometimes they will sell bags of shavings.
