Bedding for baby chicks

My ducks busted open and ate some of my peat moss and it didn't hurt them, so i dont think coir would hurt a chick as long as they have grit available. Shavings get so smelly when wet, I have my chicks on newspaper with straw on top and old clothes in the spot they sleep in, for comfort.
They kept jumping out of the storage bin to roost on the edge, then started to venture out around on the carpet so we have them in a half bath we dont use with a gate and plenty of roost spots till its warm enough for them to be outside with the ducks.

Your chicks are so cute and tiny!
My four started flying out of the bin immediately to roost on the sides when we got them at 2 weeks old, so we put them in a bathroom we don't use. Today are now 4 weeks old, flying out of the bathroom, scratcting through the newspaper and eating it. I hope it warms up soon, so they can go outside with the ducks.
This is their new fav place to roost/sleep since i took the rack, lamp and crate out when I cleaned it today.
