I have a linoleum floor and use a combination of 1.5" of hemp bedding on the bottom and 2-3" of straw on top. I also sprinkle the whole lot with diatomaceous eath to help prevent mites. The hemp absorbs a lot of the odour and the straw lets a lot of the fall through so the chickens aren't walking on in and getting it all over their feet. I also use a 6"x 1" piece of timber to hold it all back and keep it from being flicked into the water or feed.
