bedding in brooder--what to use?

Im not sure either. I use a feeder designed for chicks. I give them constant access to it and yes, they pick at the shavings. But they never really eat them.

Try tossing some oatmeal in the shavings, to give them something to work for - and take their wee little minds off the shavings.

Hey if i feed my chicks oatmeal do they have to have grit with it? They are 4-5 weeks old. They also eat the pine shavings...is it ok?

No, just feed them a little at a time, a sprinkle. Oats are esily giested and in small amounts wont hurt them. But it gives them soemthing to look for besides wood shavings.
