Bedding in my coop

We just replaced the pine shavings in our run with sand. I like the sand much better, since I can see the poop, avoid stepping on it, and scoop it up with a kitty litter scooper. I don't have to remove my shoes when I come in the house and we don't have pine shavings all over the house. We also get some fierce winds, and I was concerned about having the shavings all over the hardware cloth and the yard.

In the hen house proper, where we have the nest boxes and the roosts, we have linoleum and I clean that every morning by scraping out the poo with a dustpan and putting it into the compost pile. I wipe it with a damp paper towel afterward.

But we only have four chickens-- I don't know if this system would be practical for many more than that.

I don't have pine shaving in the run, just in the coop. I think pine shavings would be messy in the run. If you could post some pictures it would be interesting to see how you're set up.
