Bedding Introduction.

Hey,

I have had my 25 chicks on newspaper and now on the third day I am going to switch over to pine shavings and I am wondering is there a special way to introduce it to them or just dump it in there?

Newspaper is not good, it's too slippery underfoot and can cause foot and leg problems. Replace it with the shavings and cover the shavings with some kitchen roll for the first day or two, then remove and leave them on the shavings.

If I have had newspaper down for 2 days already can I just put shavings down?

Not sure officially. But I just started with shavings from day 1 and the chicks were fine so I bet you'd be good. Make sure to use shavings and not pine chips. And make sure no cedar!

Yes. Put a 2-3 inch layer of shaving on the bottom of the brooder. Make sure that you use pine or aspen shavings; not cedar shavings or wood chips.
