What type of bedding do you use for your chicken and babies?

We have been using straw but it's so hard to clean the pens. I did buy some aspen wood chips from TSC and love it for the babies much cleaner.

And what can't you use for bedding?

I use pine shavings for chicks and in the coops. Hay in my nestboxes.

You want to avoid cedar shavings with the chicks. The aromatic oils give off fumes that can cause respiratory difficulties in chicks.

The first 5 days I used paper towels over aspen, then just aspen. I still use aspen even today in my coop. It's great! My neighbor has his own wood mill and mills pine trees from his yard, he said I could have wheel barrels full of it, so I may switch to that as bedding for the floor in their coop. Otherwise, it gets muddy.

I have used large flake pine shavings since I brought them home. It's easy to keep clean and they seem to like it.
