Hello BYC owners, Im keeping the chickens on wood chippings but I've be told to put a layer of sand under to keep the smell away although I did'nt ask which kind of sand would building sand be ok or would it have to be like sharp sand ? and then the wood chippings on top.

Also my dad does loads and loads of paper shredding and I was thinking of re-using it in the coop as bedding, would that be ok with the bonus of recycling the shredded paper and keeping the cost even lower ?

Whats you forts ?

I use horse wood pellets and love them. I would not use sand inside as it may be hard to clean and remove. Paper is a great and I would mix it with shavings. Keep the smell away by either having deep bedding that is mixed up frequently or cleaning the coop regularly. Do you have roost dropping trays? That can also help with coop cleanliness.

Ok so it would be better mixed with some thing else? And no but im going to make one its only a tray with a few perchs on int it ?
