Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on Mountain Peeps' advice; I personally like pine shavings the best. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

glad you have joined us.

Mountain Peeps has given you a link to explore the standard options. I use sand in the nests, coop and run. But anything soft that will provide comfort and reduce the chance of eggs breaking will work - some members have even used rugs, fabrics. But IMO best to go with something easily available to you and that you can clean/change easily if soiled.

I am new to raising chickens too. Mine are 4 months old now, and I believe they will be close to laying age in October. I too was wondering if straw was the best thing to use, and if chickens lay eggs all the way through winter. I live in central Illinois, so it can get pretty cold sometimes.

Welcome!!!

We use hay. I do have a question though. Can u use wood saw dust in the coop?

I would advice against using saw dust as the fine particles create lots of dust issues that can cause your chickens to have respiratory problems. The fine particles are also likely to get into the bird's eyes, causing irritation and infection. And over time, it tends to pack down into a paper-mache type texture that is difficult to stir and keep clean.
