We r new to raiding chickens. I have read that chicken's egg laying slows down in the winter due to not enough daylight. Chickens need many hours of daylight to produce eggs. I have also read that you can trick the chickens by putting a times light source in the coop to make them think there is more daylight than there actually is . We won't bother to do that through the winter. We shall allow the chickens bodies to work the way God created them too. (-:

I was thinking the same way. Thank you. I have read that wood chips can be used.

Pine chips will also work, but whether you use the shavings or the chips, be sure and use pine, not cedar. Cedar is too aromatic and there and a number of sources that claim that the cedar oils have been harmful and even toxic to chickens.
