when using deep litre method can you use wood ash instead of Damascus earth

I don't see why not, many people don't even use diatomaceous earth, it's just about keeping the droppings and bedding well enough mixed and dry enough that there's no amonia smell. Obviously just make sure your ash is well and truly cold :)

If you want a truly composting deep litter, do not use DE or any insecticide component.
