I've heard alot of different things to use as bedding in a brooder. Right now I plan on using paper towels until they get their footing but not sure what to do after that.

Here's how they'll be living
Outside in an old rabbit hutch
There's only three of them
It has a wire cage bottom.
They will be off the ground

Any suggestions?

I think you'll like the convenience of shavings. They smell good, provide good footing to prevent leg injury and the larger sized shavings won't look like food for the chicks. $5 for a 3 cubic foot compressed bale is pretty standard price.

Any particular kind of shavings?
I've heard wood shavings make a huge mess.
