I use paper towels the first couple of weeks to make sure everyone is pooping ok. Can't tell with shavings. Gotta watch to see who's pooping and eating and drinking. Plus I expect shavings right away might lead to pasty butt.
Then I switch to pine shavings. So far so good. Seems to me most folks run into a problem when they start treating chicks like babies and pets and add all the unnecessary "toys" and "treats". Follow the rules in the text books and you can't go wrong.
