I am wondering if you can use shredded newspaper instead of pine shavings?

that's what I just switched to have to shred myself. don't use colored or paper with a shine.

Keep in mind that whatever bedding you use they may eat some. Why don't you try sand? It is cheap, works as grit, they can dust bath in it if you keep it clean, and you don't have to change it just use a kitty litter scoop to clean.

I've been using sand or hay scraps for awhile, before I started that I used corn cob for my chicks and rats.

It would probably work. But I wouldn't want them to eat too much of the paper. Also, if possible, don't use shiny paper or paper with colorful ink on it.

I used shredded paper at first and wont be using it after this weeks clean out. It seems to get inside the food and water more than the wood shavings.
